Cruise the posts, lots of information already posted.
But the short of it is: use a light Carolina rig on medium spinning tackle: 1/4-1 oz egg sinker, swivel and a short leader with a #4 hook. Use fresh dead shrimp chunk or FishBites for bait and you can usually catch all the whiting you can stand to clean. Plus a random pompano or redfish. Maybe a flounder.
Throw spoons or bubble rigs and you might get some bluefish or Spanish macs.
Chunk a small crab, big finger mullet or chunk of mullet out on a bigger rod and you might hook a bull red.

The best thing you could possibly do is hire Pier#r for a day or half day. As far as I am concerned, he doesn't charge near what he's worth. You will learn a lot and make a good, new friend.
I love it when a newbie puts up a post. Because (this) newbie (ME) gets a refresher course. That way I don't have to look like I'm not paying attention to what y'all say. There's just to much to take in and I need repetition. Thank you for the questions and answers.
What Haywire said, best money ever spent and make a new friend. Good luck and welcome.
