First if this forum is not the correct place to post this question let me know where I should post it.
Since sharks seem to be plentiful in the GS/Orange Beach area, can shark teeth be found in the surf/sand on the beach? If so it would make a good treasure hunt for the kids. And are there any good shells to be found?
If you get to the beach before the crowds you can find some decent shells, couple weeks ago i hit gold and found dozens of whole sand dollars to bring home for the wife, as for shark teeth ive never found any but its always possible

Live sand dollars turn very rank in the car on the way home, and the odor clings for awhile.

I was born in P'cola and have gone to GS/OB every summer for all of my 33 years, I have never found a sharks tooth. My wife however, has been to the beach 6 times in her life, and found one last summer! I was kinda pissed, only because I was jealous! Lol! As far as stinky sand dollars, soak them in bleach and water for a little while before taking them home.
A loose tooth on the beach is rare indeed; but have seen 'em like this on the beach.

It is not out of the ordinary to find them on Carolina coast.
I've lived here over forty years and only found one small one---it was right at the pier.
I've found and collected several, but all on the beach at Wilmington NC. Never in the gulf.
Using a flea rake in the surf, I have not seen any sharks teeth. But kids seemed to be fascinated with everything they find.
I've searched ever since I was a kid and never found a single one. This past vacation to Navarre was the first time I ever found one. Good size too, probably fell out of a 5 footer.
My memory of an uncle who used to winter near Sanibel island was that the shark's teeth he found were fossils, not current-issue. They are also larger and easier to find.

Most important, fossil teeth are high-contrast black but fresh teeth are much more camouflaged as white/grey/brown.
The ones they usually find in the Carolina's are fossilized teeth.
Not sure of the exact formation or way they get transported down the beaches but I've heard of people collecting 50-100 on the right day after a storm.
