Seriously though, my wife's family has been coming to Orange Beach since the 80's. Eventually, they bought a condo and we come come down twice a year. We fish nearly every night on the pier. We have only done night fishing because we don't want to get in the way of locals who might fishing for food during the day and the evening is more subdued. We are always met with smiles and advice by any of the locals, and we always offer up our catch to anyone keeping. However, we just purchased a home in Foley, and will now be fishing for food of our own. I really look forward to scouring this forum for info on catching all kinds of fresh food!!!

You will quickly learn, it's ALL about the 'groceries' ;-) lol

I fish Gulf Shores as much as I can but not as much as I want. Other than the octi in prime king season folks are generally very nice and patient. I've never had any problems having someone net a fish and even been given bait a few times when what I had wasn't working at that time. It's not the same in other places. I fished pcola a few weeks ago and will never go back. Folks there were very obnoxious and the language was really bad. I would never take my kids out there. At Gulf Shores Pier I never had someone tell me to reel in my line while I was free lining a bait because he "thought" he saw a cobia and wanted to throw on it. Or I've never had someone tell me not to cast in a particular area because he wanted to fish there. Both happened in a few hours at pcola.

Seriously don't be afraid to fish during the day when the rail is super crowded. That's when I have learned the most about CATCHING good groceries. Look for the guys with Fred Sanford looking pier carts, home made hoop nets and gray hair. Just be respectful and willing to move if someone hooks up or willing to help if someone needs a net. You will meet some great guys and gals down there if you fish there long enough.

We fly in tomorrow morning, to sign on property and such. We'll be vacationing in the condo, so fishing is on the agenda over the next week. We always try to stay out of the way. I reeled in a Manta Ray a couple years ago at night and everyone was really cool about pulling rods and letting me enjoy the catch. I'm not hard to spot, I'm the guy with a smoking hot lil brunette that loves to fish ... lol.
Maybe I'll meet a couple of you gents at some point this week. Went to that link ... Pier#r we may be giving you a call once we make the official move!!!

The first trip we made, I was very hesitant to go out to the octi to fish. I love to fish but my casting skills are not much better than a toddler's and I had no clue how to handle a big fish. Our first morning, I found a spot where I could be far away from others so I would t mess them up. The boys were on the opposite side. Needless to say, when a king took my bait, all I knew to do was hang on. One of the regulars dropped his rod and coached me thru it, yelled for a gaff and another regular came running.
They were selfless and helpful and made me a lifetime fan of the GS pier.
Its obvious that I'm a googan but no one has ever treated me like one.

I have fished the old pier a few times and the new pier twice but I'm coming down June 9 to spend several days on pier. Last time I was down was two years ago and fished the pier three days in a row to catch nothing but rays but the water was solid with rays and a few sharks. if you threw out it was bound you was going to catch a ray. I was fishing with a catfish rod and had a local offer me one of his spare rods but I wouldn't accept it but after breaking my rod and being spooled on the others I finally 4 hrs later accepted. I learned those days that locals would help you anyway they could if you would listen and accept help. I know a lot of locals get their groceries from the pier so I always offer what I catch to them if I'm just going to throw it back in. Just want to say thank you to the locals there and hope to meet some of y'all at the pier June 9 thru the 13.

We will be there the same week. :) stik is easy to spot- long beard and an orange do-rag. I'm the chunky chick that has the casting abilities of a 4 year old. ;)
