Anybody have any experience with the Offshore Angler Cobia Special 8' rod? Got a gift certificate to BPS and I'm thinking of getting one for my greenie 706. I'm thinking its not really a Cobia rod but more of a king rod. It is rated for 15-30# and has the big eyes. I have true Cobia rod that's too stiff for the kings so I need more of a king rod and I can get this one for cheap, if it is really more of a king than Cobia rod.

That 2-5 oz rating is hooeee... IMHO
The 9 footer is much heavier action and more suited as a 'cobia rod', but the 8 foot is a decent pier-king rod (for the money) especially with a GC.
Still J&M may be able to beat that ;-)
You might want to call BPS first to be sure they are in stock that day as a LOT of them are bought up and availablity is at times limited.
And keep in mind these are 1 piece rods.

They got 3 in Daphne, so I can get it today, and all i want are 1-pieces, except for surf rods of course. As far as J&M's Gulfstream rods go, I would buy nothing else if I could, but they are a little too steep for me. With my gift certificate this Offshore Angler would run me about $80.00, I believe it's about twice that for a GS-king rod.Quote:

I too keep looking at those same Offshore Angler 'Cobia Special' rods.
I was wondering if they've enough action in the tip for slinging live baits for kings... They seemed pretty stiff to me?
I've a couple other Offshore Angler rods, and I'm very happy with them.
I use 2pc rods for my surf rods (12' is too long to transport) and some traveling FW rods.
I've never had mine come apart either, but then again, I make sure they're well snugged.

I want something I can sling live baits, but also throw my yozuri's with. I'm wondering if the OA Cobia would work for that.

I bought his Offshore Angler/Offshore Extreme ~ Cobia Special, (8', 15-30#, 2-5oz) for a very fair price.
I put my 704z on it and it felt pretty good to me, tied an ounce of lead on it and gave it a cast, tossed it a good 40yards down the parking lot without even trying.
Feels like a stiff Medium with enough action in the tip to let is cast a medium/large live bait, it ought to cast any of our usual live baits with no problem, and yet have the backbone to horse Kings/Reds without any problem.
#r's assessment is dead-on and I'm looking forward to trying it out on the pier/surf.

IMO it would NOT throw at all with any wind and a light lure, the action just doesn't have enough zing to it's sling.

Went to BPS today and they actually have a 9' on the shelf...I think I'm in love, very nice rod, especially for price. After some good advice from several people I think I'm going to switch up my arsenal. Get rid of my 8' key largo cobia(a true Cobia rod), replace it with the 9' OSA Cobia. Get rid of the greenie 706(don't really need two bail-less reels). Then put a 7500ssv on a shimano crucial 7'6" MH FA for artificials. I still have my two 714z's for lighter tackle.
BarnburnerAU, thanks for the thread and #r thanks for the input, I'd been on the fence for awhile about trying one of these, and then Sammy popping in with a 8' for sale was golden.
I'm looking forward to trying out this 8'/704z combo at the pier.
I'm also looking forward to trying Sammy's food tomorrow, my wife and I have a 'kid free' lunch date. ;)
Sorry haven't been able to do much web surfing lately. I'm normally at the airport location since this one just open up, but ain't no tellin where I'm at half the time. I could be in west mobile one minute and in daphne the next.
