Party boat rod

Hi guys, I'm thinking about building a rod to use on the party boats this Winter. Any ideas on the length and lure weight it should be? I'm planning on putting spinning guides on it so that I can use it with either a free spool or a spinning reel. Is that another one of my dumb ideas? Would a free spool or a spinning reel work best out there? I would like to use it for surf fishing too. I'm I asking to much out of a rod? I would like it to be firm enough to use it for the party boat and still be able to wing it out there aways while fishing the surf. Now, I don't want you to waste any fishing time while you ponder this but any advise would be appreciated.

usually boat rods are shorter in length then a surf rod....I would think about some heavy jigging rod in the 6-1/2 to 7 ft length depends on the party boat and length of trip....not going far out might limit the need for a heavy rod and the type of fish to target on the trip....different gps numbers hold different fish on them , but the captain should have an idea what to expect on the trip....there's always those unexpected fish that show to feed on the reef fish

Flyguy, I have a boat rod that I think would be like something you could build with spinning guides on it. It is a Fenwick Seahawk, 7.0' 2-4oz lures, 40 to 60# line. It has 7 guides plus the tip. Used it many times with a 4/0 penn Senator on head boats for grouper and red snapper, it is a great rod for that. I see no reason why it couldn't be used with spinning guides as a heavy surf rod as well as a boat rod with a conventional or spinning reel. I'm sure you could google it, if not I'd be happy to take a picture of it for you.
