I just got a Penn Battle II 6000 reel combo, I also have a Okuma 8000 with fresh 17# line on it that I will not be using. Thinking about transferring the 17# over to the Battle II 6000 for use in the surf. Question to the experts, is 17# on the 6000 a bit much for the surf, targeting no specific kind of fish.
Wouldnt be too much if you get on to some reds, with that combo your gonna want to target the bigger fish in the surf zone anyway, 17# test would handle redfish, bigger stingrays, black drum ect... I would bring a lighter action combo for pomps, flounder, and other smaller surf species
I have that exact combo with 20 pound test and I hit 6 bull reds in perdido pass with it so I would say 17 would be good. It gives u more line capacity in case ur catch wants to run ! Hope it helps :)

You might find yourself horsing in smaller fish with that setup, so consider that when chosing bait and hook.
