Thread: Penn Prevail or Battalion?

Looking at the 8' Prevail or Battalion as a surf/Pier spinning rod. Both are rated 3/4-3 oz and have a mod fast action. Anyone have experience with either of these? Also looked at the 8' Battle combo online, but can't find a rating for the rod and the 8' only comes with the 5000 reel.

I have the Battle II 5000 combo, mine came with the 7' rod rated at: 12-20# mono 15-40# braid, 1/2 - 1 1/2 oz weight.

I think the inshore battle 5000 combo is 7'. The 5000 surf combo is 8. Have you used the 7' on the pier? If so what did you fish for and how did you like it?

I would go with the battle combo personally. Think the rod has a little slower action than the surf rods(relatively speaking, they are all fairly stiff rods). That battalion is gonna be too much rod for the pier, it is really stiff. I like be the prevails in the sirf(I have the 12ft). That being said, J&M carries(or at least they did, haven't been there in a while) an 8ft Profile spinning rod for around $60-65(if remember the price right). It is pretty much and All Star knockoff. This was my king rod before I had a custom one built. Great cig slinger and I use it in the surf every time I go as well. Can handle up to a 2oz pyramid weight. Caught a 4lb 4oz pompano on it last year in the surf. I have a Battle 5000 mounted on it with 30# braid.

So are you recommending the battle 5000 combo in 7' or in 8'? If J&M had the profile rods on their website I'd probably order one, I've had several people tell me that they were a good beginner king rod.

8ft would be better if you are gonna use it in the surf as well.
