TOO much :wall:
I have a penn gti 220 on a glass rod for $80
or I can set you up in a good mitchell 302 salt wate :yippee:r spinner and rod for $75
Yep, too much.
If I was buying a brand new Penn reel for the pier, it'd be a spinner, and I'd grab one of the new Spinfisher V's, either the SSV6500 or SSV7500.
Especially since I like to surf fish and when wading out my gear gets splashed and dunked regularly.
And if I was going to get the Fathom Star Drag, it'd be the smaller FTH25N.
I'd stay away from level winds, IMO they impede casting.

what he said
But will it work cause I really like it, It's cool, lol if not what model will work, I've got the ok from the wife/boss to get one for next vacation
I'll check out the FTH25N, thanks
I am no good at retrieving without a levelwind, i forget about my job, I am used to bass fishing
[size=12pt][font=comic sans ms]The reel in your link is way over kill, most of us use 12 or 15# mono on a spinning reel. If you don’t know what you want or need, call J & M and talk to one of the guys that fish the pier a lot, James, Terry or John. Those guys can answer your questions and you can find out about ordering, shipping or pick up.
They sold me a combo in 2008 that I still use and it didn’t cost me an arm and a leg.
Hope this helps.

thanks for the advice Fin, but can anyone tell me a levelwind for around 2 bills that will work, I hate spinners but I do have one that will work
The fathom would probably work ok, just not that big of one, get like a 20 or 25 for the pier if that's what you want. It will hurt your casting ability some using a level-wind but whatever floats your boat.
Why spend that much?
A Penn Long Beach 66 or 9M should do the job nicely.
That was 'standard pier equipment' back in the 1970s.
I'm partial to my Penn Squidder though ;-) :fishing: :headbang:
Pier#r, you can't take it with you!!! that's my motto lol spend while you've got it, if I don't she will, lol, oh yeah and I make more everyday!!
Buy a Finchaser, works really well!!!
If u must, like Dave said an ol school 65, maybe an ambassador 7000 or a penn 970. Btw,not a good day to b a hawgfan
Yeah I realize that, bring BP back, lol
Arkansas has not seen suckin like that since Clinton left...lmfao...
I hate to bring politics into this but, I wish this country had Clinton back
Since you are a bass fisherman I give it to you in bass terms. Most people use a spinner because of the casting ability and more water covered more opportunities to catch a fish. That reel is not meant to be cast like a bait caster. that type of reel is good for trolling or a bottom dropping. There are plenty post on here about this topic. If momma gave the OK I would call J&M and see what kind of setup I could get for the money.
I gotta practice with my spinner it's got an 11ft med/heavy, and bait caster has a 7ft med/heavy and I can throw the bait caster easily 50 to 75 ft farther and it doesn't tear my finger up!!
Know this is not a levelwind but is one of the top casting reels and is similar to what you're wanting. My buddy casted a 5 oz weight 207 yards with one of these. http://www.alltackle.com/penn_525.htm
