Pier Bait Vendor
What is the status on the sale of live bait at the pier ? What baits do they normally have available and are they reliable about having the bait ? Haven't seen it mentioned for a while . Hoping it was going to save me the time and hassle of running all over town looking for bait in the mornings . Thanks for the update .

Re: Pier Bait Vendor
As of last Saturday, the sign said they had bull minows and live shrimp. I bought neither, so I can't comment on price or quality.
They also sold frozen cigs. I thought their cigs were a bit on the pricey side, but they were actually cheaper than walmart. WalMart's 2.5 lb bags were $11 bucks where I stopped, as opposed to $20 for a five pound box at the pier. They had actually sold out of the five lb boxes but may have replenished by now.
They can be had quite a bit cheaper at J&M and well, you get to go to J&M.

And I am sure better quality that means a lot for the cigs.... :headbang:
use to love catching fresh and putting away for future trips on the piers to the east, when Gulf shores wasted there....to bad cig's aren't around that pier ....not sure why....although I saw a fresh caught one this spring that surprised me :fishing:

Wal-Mart for frozen cigs. And I go to Top Gun for my live shrimp.

Re: Pier Bait Vendor
I refuse to use wal-Mart cigs. Tried it twice and both time was rotten when it's thraw. Buddy of mine recommended captain salty brand you can get from west marine or tackle this. Never look back. Nice size and once thraw out, looks like just caught.

If walmart cigs are $11 for 2.5lb bag and J&M cigs are $15.99 for 5lb box, why would anybody go to walmart?
My math ain’t all that good, but seems like J&M is a much better deal.

Re: Pier Bait Vendor
The ones from Walmart are great for Spanish! They slurp them up.
-
Re: Pier Bait Vendor
The way things are looking,it's going to be another tough late summer for cigs and I expect we(J&M) will be out by early Sept.So if you like fishing cigs,ya might want to talk to your bait supplier to see where they stand.........

Re: Pier Bait Vendor
Thanks for the heads-up, John. How long will it be before you are able to re-supply?
I need to make room in my freezer for a couple of boxes.

Wal Mart was open at 4 am and I was trying to get to the pier before daylight. I was shocked to see what they charged for a 40 oz (2.5 lb) bag. I thought they were five pound bags till I looked closer.
Mr. John, do you have a layaway plan? :)

They almost have to slurp them up they're so mushy.

Re: Pier Bait Vendor
I always take the time to catch a few pinfish, croaker, mullet ect to put in my freezer before I start fishing..Beats the heck out of store bought crap...I hit different backwater areas when the gulf isnt cooperating to get in some baitfishing time...Its still fishing and a great way to teach a kid a few things.

Re: Pier Bait Vendor
Thanks guys ,looks as though I'll not be able to count on the pier vendor . Sure hope J&M have restocked by the time I get there in October . How is the bait situation around the pier that time of year ? Hopefully I will be able to catch plenty of live bait and will not have to use the previously frozen stuff.
-
Re: Pier Bait Vendor
[size=12pt][font=comic sans ms]just out of curiosity I asked about live bait as I left the pier today and they have bull minnows @ $4.99 a dozen, but no shrimp yet. The shrimp will be $3.75 if my memory serves me correctly.

Re: Pier Bait Vendor
What's the big hold up on live bait? They sure don't have a problem with having overpriced fishing gear available.
-
Re: Pier Bait Vendor
The few things I've bought in there have been reasonably priced considering the opportunity to charge tourist prices.
-
Re: Pier Bait Vendor
I'll be happy to tell you what the hold up is on live bait dave. It's the same reason fishing sucks,it's hot!!!!,the hoppers have played out, the brownies are gone and the only thing left in the area are white shrimp are the size of a match stick. There are a few good shrimp in Mobile Bay but it's not worth the effort because few shrimp are sold this time of year.Live bait is one of the most perasable products a retailer can sell.If ya don't sell live shrimp within 48 hours, their dead.

Re: Pier Bait Vendor
Oh, I did not know. I am still learning something new about saltwater fishing everyday, been a freshwater fisherman all my life. Another question about live bait, is there a better chance to catch spanish sardines in the mornings, during the middle of the day or afternoon/early evening? Thanks!
-
Re: Pier Bait Vendor
There were very few sardines most of the year, they showed up a few weeks ago and that's the reason the kings hung around so long.As for your question, you catch them when their around. They will leave just as fast as they showed up on days, and the next day they will blackout the water all day long,if not for a week.

Mr. John, forgive my far-from-the-ocean ignorance. I'm planning a couple of trips in October, Lord willing. Will there be another shipment of cigs by then or am I just out of luck?

Hey Hawg fan....would I be correct that a woo pig sooie is in order? :yay:
I don't even remember the last time I stopped at Bass Pro on I-10 on the way down. Yes. J&M is that good. Everything you need, good prices, and great folks who are up to date on the latest bite. From Gulf Shores to Panama City, I haven't found another place that even compares for facilities, selection, price, and helpful staff.
Just watch out for the flag on your pier cart while you are there. ;)

Hawgfan, you need to get on down here and join in the fun at the pier and catch some fish.
J & M is highly recommended by the locals and visitors because you can go to J & M and get anything you need for pier, surf and boat fishing, plus get solid advice and answers to your questions as a free bonus. The knowledgeable and friendly folks who work there actually HELP you with your selections.
When I keep hearing praises for a business of any kind from people who have nothing to gain from their comments, I just have to go see for my self why so many people agree; in a world where agreement ain’t so common.

Re: Pier Bait Vendor
Thanks for the support guys.Like any business,we have our flaws and people that don't care for us but we try to keep that to a minimum. Our prices are fair but not always the cheapest but the customer service makes up for that.

Re: Pier Bait Vendor
I have enjoyed every trip to J&M....although I haven't spent much $ when there(I am all tackled up right now), I do enjoy the experience and people, and also looking through the tee shirts for clearances that I find better in the fall :poke: :fishing: ....but it is my place to go when in the area....and learned almost the hard way, they close at 5:00 pm....thanks again Mr. John for saving my rear end.... that day!!! :headbang: with the bally hoo

The customer service part is true. Every time I have been in there, I have had at least one person ask if they can help me within one minute of being on an isle, and no less than three or four people ask if they can help by the time I have left the store.
That has come in hand y a couple of times this year when I needed advice on a yozuri and when I needed advice on vertical jigging for tuna. I had no clue on that one, and it is not pier related, so the guy showed me what to get and I caught some Tuna.

Re: Pier Bait Vendor
To add to everything else that's been mentioned, I've gone in with tackle problems (like a broken rod tip) and had John grab it and fix it on the spot. Had a reel spring problem that one of the employees (James) took care of immediately, too. You just don't find that kind of service at a discount store, and the folks at the big box store can't tell you what was biting, and where, just a couple of hours ago. It's worth any extra driving time it might take to get there.

Re: Pier Bait Vendor
Well guys I can't get there quick enough, we are leaving home on the 26th and I have never fished in saltwater before, but the pier looks a little intimidating too me, I may stick with the surf. We are staying at the Admirals Quarters, Is there any good fishing down that way, if the wife goes shopping I won't have a ride anyways, Thanks
-
Re: Pier Bait Vendor
Don't be intimidated. Every single person fishing out there had a first time on the pier. Go, watch, ask, use common sense, and, most of all, have fun. :fishing:

Re: Pier Bait Vendor
Hawgfan if your wife is gonna go shopping have her drop you off at the pier, these guys can type instructions until their fingers hurt but the best way to learn how they do it is get out and see then join.
