pier rig question

Hey guys. I'm coming back down next weekend for a couple months and I thought I would bring a little more of my fishing gear. I have several 8' medium action, 1 to 3 oz., planer board trolling rods with Ambassador 5501 C level wind trolling reels I was thinking about bringing to use off of the pier. They don't cast well but I think they would be good for dropping along the pilings.
I just wondered how many guys use that type of rig and how you do with them. They are spooled with 10 lb Trilene XL right now. I thought 10 lb. may be a little light. I thought 10 to 17 lb. test should handle sheep head etc. What would you consider a good line test?
I have some medium / heavy 8' spinning rigs with 20 - 25 lb. test I'm bringing for shore fishing on the gulf side and bay side.

That setup might work just fine.
Those 8 foot medium action rods sound like just the ticket to sense a light bite from winter sheepshead,
and it gives you a bit more leverage out away from the pilings once you hook up.
I use 10# on my favorite sheepshead rig baitcaster (also and Ambassador).
If you find the line is too light you can always get it respooled here, but you will get more bites with lighter line.

Is there a rod/reel combo at walmart for big game at the end of the pier?

Ugly stick GX2 paired with penn pursuit 4000 or 5000 is a great combo and has landed many reds, jacks, kings, sharks for me. or you can just get the pursuit II combo.

Different WalMarts will have different combo set ups and different rods and reels sold separately. The WalMart closest to me doesn't have any Penn reels sold alone, yet the WalMart 15 minutes away does. The stores closer to Gulf Shores keep them in stock all the time.

If your in Gulf Shores just go on to J & M and let them take care of you. If you need bait they will have it you don't ever want to buy any bait at Walmart it may have been in their freezer for years.

J&M is the best place
But Bass Pro has good deals too.
About the only thing I get at Walmart is cheap spec rigs Their bubbles are horrible. Crack just under normal use.

Speaking of speck rigs, I Picked some up some buccaneer white 2/0 1/8oz Jigs!
