Pompano Clarification

My fishing trips as of late are pretty much limited to days at the beach with the family and the occasional rod in the water. It makes it difficult to get any kind of routine.
My question comes from what I heard. I had a guy tell me that if you want to catch pompano you need to be close to some sort of structure and not in the middle of the beach. Is there any truth to this? :confused: Also when fishing from the beach how far out do you need to get your bait? I am typically at the GSP pavilion.

My lovely wife and I just returned from a week on the beach at Ft. Morgan. We used live shrimp, broken into bite-sized pieces, live sand fleas(mole crabs), and fish bites artificial bait to catch Pompano. Most our Pompano were caught at high tide on top the first sand bar, and in the cuts between the bars. The higher the tide, the better the bite. Only caught one or two each day, except for Thur., I caught my limit (3), in one hour and started flounder fishing (caught four). Hope this will help you.

Yes, chillinfish, they were. Most hits were whe I pulled the jig off the bar into the deeper water.
