When someone says 80 class spinning reel. What does that mean?
A good question, with no clear answer. It seems that every manufacturer has a different opinion of spinning real size and capacity - and it varies even more over time. The only general rule of thumb is - the smaller the first number, the smaller the reel, and vice-versa.
I found a good explanation on a vender site that should steer you in the right direction for your target species and method.
How to choose the best fishing reel size for your needs (spin)
It may have something to do with the width of the spool (i.e. 80mm = 3" apprx.)
Though most fisherfolkses are more interested in "line class" as a descriptor.
I have a Penn Fierce 6000 and a Penn Battle II 4000 and was just wondering if those would be 60 and 40 class reels.
yes, and those are my size preferences as well. I fill them up with braid to give extra line capacity....just in case.
If you asked 80 class trolling reel the answer would be easy but there is no rhyme nor reason how spinning reels are sized according to the model size. Good example, the current Shimano Baitrunner 12000 is smaller than the old model 6500.
