Was looking at a thread by barnburnerAU and reminded me of days long gone by when I use to fish the rock jetty at Alabama point. Caught lots of spanish, reds , specks and a few ling when they running. Is it still open to the public or was it consumed by development.
The jetties are still open to the public.however they are both a good long walk.the walk to the east jetty is easier as it has a wooden walkway most of the way to it.the west jetty you have to park in a vacant lot next to the restaurant made out of shipping containers.and walk from there.and still good fishing to.also I am not sure how long it is going to last but right now they are dredging the pass.
It definitely takes commitment to fish the west jetty. I doubt I'll ever fish it again unless it's from a boat. Also, I no longer have the strength, agility and lack of fear to go rock hopping on the jetty. At my age, I have better things to do than lie around waiting for broken bones to heal.
yea dont feel bad haywire.those rocks are risky.I am 29 years old and I dont even like fishing them.to much of a risk to "maybe" catch something.
Everyone's agility (and ability) must be different.
Willie Ducharme was in his 80s when he caught the Alabama state record Spotted seatrout from the west jetty in May 1980.
He was 92 the last time I spoke with him and he was fishing from the seawall that day. Said he was recovering from a fractured ankle and the doctor told him "no more jetty fishing".
When I asked if he was injured on the rocks he told me it was a mis-step coming down off a ladder in his house to change a light bulb.
He said he would have been much better off had he gone fishing that day ;-)

Wow that guy sounds like he was in great shape for his age.
We stay in the condo next to the west jetty so we can have easy access to the rocks. It's been hit or miss on the Spanish and sheepshead when we're there in april. Best bite still tends to be first light. Never seen a cobia hooked out there. Does get a little dicey scrambling on the rocks trying to land a big red or it was real crazy the time my buddy caught a 28lb king out there on a gotcha.
Any idea if or when the dredging will be out of the way? I saw a post that looked like they were expelling sand on the beach side and sort of making the trip to the end of the jetty a little easier.
You can crawl out on the west jetty and take your chances--- no problem. Why can't some rocks/gravel be dumped at the wall at Alabama point and let us in??? I'll watch my footing and be careful . Who do we have to contact to get the ball rolling? thx jjm
