Sorry if this was addressed before....but what are the advantages of building your own rods?
If your experienced enough to know what everything is and how to do it right, then you get a rod built to fit you, it'll probly cast better, feel better in your hand, catch fish better, and (now this is just an opinion) but they can give you a sence of pride in your rod that no store bought can give
The self satisfaction, of doing it yourself, and you can build one just like you want it..
So it's possible for me (myself) to build one? Or is it kinda like getting fitted for a tux and someone else building it according to your specs....or both?
Either way can be done.. A ton of people that have rods built for them don't have anything done very differently than the other custom rods around , but IMHO if your going to have one built for you, then make it fits YOU and YOUR fishing style.. I personally cannot fish a rod with a short butt on it.. I feel like a dog tryin to tie show laces.. Just doesn't work for me
LOL! Thanks Peaches, that really does make a lot of sense!
+ 10,000,000 on the longer buts, I can't stand a short butt on a bigger rod, don't mind them in a yak though, but only for little stuff
In just the short time I've been @ BPS I've heard the gambits from customers who fuel these current trends in rodbuilding on everything from offshore standup and trolling to inshore and pier fishing to bass and panfish.
Long handle, short handle, cork, no cork, pistol grip, long foregrip, psuedo foregrip...
you name it and people ask for that, and more.
Years ago I built many of my own rods simply because I could not find what I wanted (or thought I wanted) on the shelves.
But I did the custom wraps FOR ME, to personalize my work.
Nowadays the myriads of rods and reels and tackle boggles the mind!
And much of it works well and 'looks' pretty darn good.
So all this variation allows for a good bit of personalization.
But it's still all driven by choice. Your choice...
Clemons is long gone, but thank goodness we still have some online rod component dealers and even fortunate to have several sources in OBch and Pensacola.
Take advantage of these resources (plus fishing forums, retail stores and especially 'test casting' on the pier) to get a good idea of what YOU want, and go for it! ;-)
Blah, Blah, Blah, Duh... You can pick your own colors of wrap and that makes the rod prettier. :o
