Rod for my 712z

I have a couple 712z's, one is my sabiki rig, the other was my jigging rig but my 20+ year old rod finally broke Saturday. It was a 7' medium, but I'm thinking of getting an 8' whippy type with the big eyes, however I have no experience with those whippy type poles. (I am assuming others refer to these as whippy rods, I don't know the official name). Anyway, I want this for a pier rod so I can get my lures out as far as possible. Do others use this type and are you pleased with it? Are there reasons I wouldn't like it?

The one I found is a used custom for $80.00 so I'd like to get some opinions before I purchase.

The problem you will run into is that depending on what kind of lures you are throwing, the whippy rod will give you less action on the lure. Like a gotcha or looney jig for instance, they are heavy sinking lures and if you have a slower action rod, it will take a lot more force to make the lure work properly. If you are throwing lipped lures, then the rod would work well. Just my two cenys, no expert by any means. Personally, I like faster action rods, especially for any kind lure chucking I plan on doing.

I would recommend a 7-8 foot fast action rod for throwing hard baits and jigs. Another thing you must take into account is the relatively slow retrieve rate of the 712. The stiffer rod will help give the jig better action when working to through the water, as well as aid in fighting the fish by not giving them very much slack to run with from the flex in the rod.
