Rod and reel combo question

I know everyone has their favorites but i am looking for a nice rod and reel combo set for sight fishing larger fish. i noticed several this week on the pier but never asked anyone what they were. they seem pretty common around 8 ft or so fast actuion tip with plenty of backbone the reel is round not sure what it is looks like a spinning reel but the spool seems recessed. what braid line would you recommend for king cobia etc also whats the best wire to buy to make a king leader or would it be better to use a higher lb mono or flourocarbon leaded with a uni knot?

You should take those questions to THE tackle shop J&M they will set you up with great advice and get you fixed up.

No on the mono/fluoro leader for kings. They'd just bite through it. I use 27 lb coffee colored single-strand wire.

Based on your description of the reels I would say they are Penn 706Z or 704Z.

Most of the rods you describe are probably custom made. J&M builds some great 8 ft rods like you described, that are custom made off the rack (Does that makes sense?)if that is what you are looking for.

Yes , your right i looked it up and that it i like penn and yes i a pribably will have them build me one. Just open to ideas so i know what im looking for. 8 ft med heavy fast action tip im assuming is a good choice so i can work jigs and different lures so the rod really makes the lures come alive with give so it dont snatch it out of the water i like to fish lures fast so i want something to handle a large fish and yet have finesse if that makes sense? I don't use braid, just plain ole 15# mono for me.
And 27# single strand for leader, tie your own. A small swivel, an 8" piece of wire, 2x or 3x #4 treble and two haywire twists is all you need.
Lots of affordable rods out there, I use a 40 year old 2-piece glass Diawa rod and a 3 year old Bass Pro Saltwater rod, both around 8', with 6500 series spinning reels.
You dont have to spend a fortune to get a good combo for kings. Go to J&M and they will set you up.
