I hate to hear that. :( Good luck Sam!!!
The pier house will be accepting donated fish for her.
I wonder if somebody kicked her because she was trying to get a meal?
I sure wish they would put signs up
Saying to NOT to feed the birds
hope she heals well, henry at fairhope pier broke her's in catrena, one of the regulars nursed her back to health, she's fine now but you can kinda tell when she flies.
I got the scoop from Harley this morning. Sam flew in front of some one that was casting and they connected. No foul play involved.....
:(
I hear they taste 'fishy' ::)
:eat:
hope sam gets better i ll go catch some mullet and bring it to the pier house if i can.
I think they taste like spotted owl but others say bald eagle.
:eat:Naw, they taste like Snowy Egret. Especially when you roast 'em like a Thanksgiving turkey. They're both kinda stringy, fried.

+ more than I can write. I have a scar on my hand from when one of those sons of &$*(^$&( jabbed me last winter trying to steal a fish from me. Cut me pretty deep.
Rant :wall:
Feeding them is screwing with Mother Nature. If they can't feed themselves, Mother Nature takes them out of the gene pool. It's a hard way, but it ensures the survival of the specie. Only the strongest and most capable of surviving reproduce and send those traits on down the line. Such a simple concept, I can't understand why people fail to understand it. Or if they do understand it, fail to allow her to do her job. Not doing them any favors by feeding them - only making cripples out of them.
End of rant. :horse:

Of course there was foul play . . .
Sorry :spank:
I went by to visit Sam today and he said hi and then went in the corner and went back to sleep. The guy at the Nature Center said Sam is eating pretty good, but lets the frozen offerings totally thaw before he will eat them. If you want to donate fish to Sam, just take them to the pier house and they will get them to Sam.

Special Thanks to John G. at J & M Bait & Tackle for the case of fish donated to Sam.
Teresa at the pier said today that Sam would really appreciate some fresh fish, that he doesn't eat the frozen stuff too well. I'll have to see if I can catch him some whiting or pinfish next time I'm there, but y'all know how bad I am at catching fish, so help would be appreciated.
maybe he'd appreciate a fresh pompano dinner :eat: LOL
The other day on the pier I passed a couple cleaning sheepshead and they were feeding the pelicans the skin from the filets ::)
Were those folks throwing the skins to the water?
No they were hand feeding them to some YOY pelicans that were too dumb to know there was little to no nutritional value in them.
Saw two of them gagging on the skins trying to roll them up like a tortilla to swallow.
The birds are young and dumb, but IMHO those people are just plain stupid!
Old enough to know better IF they actually thought about the harm they were doing to them >:(
Rule #86 is no mackslap and 87 is don't feed the damn birds.

+ a bunch. Both rules would lead to a heck of a lot cleaner deck. :poke1:

I saw a pelican Mack slap itself into a light pole yesterday(from a wind gust)... Hit the pier DEAD..
ROFLMAO :yay:
Yep, I saw one try a downwind landing today and he smacked a wing into a bench and went cartwheeling and skidding down the pier. He looked a bit addled when he finally came to a stop. I recognized the look immediately because I see it in the mirror every morning.
Yup not kidding, I bagged him up for the pier staff to take to the biologist ... Pretty wierd to look up and see a dead pelican on deck
