Anyone know where I can get a stand up harness around the Gulf Shores area?
I would bet J&M has them.
J&M in Orange Beach
Thanks ill check them out
Having tried one by black magic and one by braid, I liked the black magic one waaaay better, mainly due to the design of the belt/gimble area.
Short answer is I don't know.
My experience with them is as follows:
The braid harness is my dad's, we bought it from J&M a few years back without knowing much about them. I don't know if J&M currently carries other brands. We don't fish blue water much, but we used it a few times over the years for yellowfin and marlin, as well as messing around with big sharks. It certainly lets you put plenty of pressure on a fish, but I find that when putting more than 25 or 30 pounds of pressure on a fish that is deep, the belt would dig hard on my thighs. I've had it push so hard that it causes me to start going numb in my lower body.
I was lucky enough to fish on Welcome to Lady D Charters last year. I caught a sword using a Black Magic harness. The belt was wider and better padded. Putting heavy pressure was almost trivial instead of the painful feeling I was used to. I asked the crew about it, and their opinion was black magic > smitty > braid.
So I'm not super experienced with them overall, but it was no comparison to me.
Braid doesn't sell just one model and there are different gimbel plate's for straight or bent rods....along with stand up under the butt bucket harnesses ....a few different variations
My favorite harness system is the Aftco harness and belt. The harness is called a Max Force and is one piece. It actually has two sections, one that goes around the small of your back and the other that goes under your buttocks. It is very comfortable and easily adjustable. The two fighting belts they make are the Clarion, which is the larger, and the Socorro, which is the smaller of the two. I was on the boat when a friend of mine caught a 200 lb. blue marlin on standup using this system and he was very comfortable and made pretty short work of the fish. You can get both belts and the harness at J&M Tackle in Orange Beach. They also have them on their website at www.jmtackle.com Good luck in your search.
