Storm brewing and fishing

I normally come out to fish the pier at least twice a year and just so happens this year it's looking like the storm in the gulf may be hitting at the same time we are there. I was wondering if this may affect with the fishing at all. I remember the last time we came right after a storm and the water from the Mobile Bay was affecting the fishing a good bit. Just curious if any of the locals can give an insight as to what's the usual affect when a smaller storm like this comes through. We plan on fishing from Memorial Day weekend until the following weekend.

And this may be a 'stout' one!
Still it's difficult to say with any certainty what the actual conditions (and aftermath) may end up being.
But the weather models keep spinning up some kind of sub-tropical or even tropical system that in all likelihood will dampen the holiday weekend and stir the Gulf.
The degree of which becomes problematic once the scenario takes shape, but the NWS Marine forecast is a good indicator of what we can expect...

I have been tracking it closely for the past 2-3 days now. We actually talked about it this morning after looking at the projected outlook on the following week and didn't like it one bit. Unfortunately we are cancelling the trip for next week and going to have to reschedule. Didn't want to take the chance of going out their and having to sit on the sidelines more than we get to fish. Grant it, I will be back soon!

Yep. looks like a washout a/o a blowout for this weekend. That really bites. I might still try to fish if I can find a spot out of the wind.

Eh just use it for much longer casts! Put a little kite on your line even!

My boys (11 & 14) and I are coming down this weekend through the first and love fishing at your wonderful pier! Cancelling due to the weather isn’t an option😉! So, that being said, any insight into pier fishing during the storm and/or having a backup plan somewhere in a bay or the canal would be appreciated. They bass fish for their school team in Oklahoma and getting wet isn’t a concern. I love your forum and have read on and off for years. This will be our 3rd trip to GS for pier fishing.

West Beach (Little Lagoon) Park or Perdido Pass (either side) at least offer 'fishable' options.
Also the Intercoastal Water way along Hwy 180 between Gulf Shores and Orange Beach

One thing that should be considered a deal-breaker, is lightning.

Good way to figure out how far away it is count the number of seconds between thunder and the flash and then divide by 5. That is how many miles it is from you. Lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from your location. On a pier with your fishing pole is not a good place to be!

If it's going to be a rainy weekend why not check out some of the local sites? The Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola is a really cool and free. I've also heard great things about QulfQuest National Museum of the Gulf in Mobile (it's on my list for my next trip down there).

I married a coffee snob and she loves Southern Grind Coffee for their espresso drinks.

I you can hear thunder Lighting can reach out and hit. If you are on the water and hear lighting need to get off. Lighting strikes have been measured up to 20 miles from the original start point. That is extreme but dont take a chance.

I am looking for a deal on a few day trip but due to long range wx forecast I am looking for 02jun and next few days after that. If anyone knows a good deal for 3 or 4 days for 2 bedroom place then message me details or number.

I've seen it happen, with thinner clouds above, dark clouds miles away and a lightning bolt striking the water just in front of the pier. That did it for me. Never again!

One more warning for visitors who bring kids - Stay out of the Gulf water. Rip currents are deadly DAYS before a bad storm like this.

We were there last year when Cindy blew through. it was our 7th year, so it was only a matter of time before we had to pay our dues. But as noted, keep the kids out of the water. we were really strict about that because we've seen the rips over the years out west of Gulf Shores in Ft. Morgan (where there aren't life guards) and they are deadly. Once you've seen people taken out and have to be rescued on what look like ok days, getting in the water on days before or during a storm will seem like insanity. Sadly, we were just about half a mile from where the little boy was killed during Cindy last year by the log that was tossed up on the beach. The build up of the swells and the general wind/beach conditions and rainfall totals before and during were impressive. And that ended up landing in Louisiana and was a tropical storm. It was an experience, though I'd prefer to not do it again and lose all those beach and fishing days!
