Two Girls Fishing

I am coming down this weekend with a friend, and neither of us has ever fished off the pier. Any advice would be greatly appreciated...i.e. rods, bait, what we might need to bring. etc etc.

Thanks. We have no clue what any of the fish are, and don't want to keep any. Just want to catch a big one. Tired of the local bass fishing, and wanted to try something different. :D

The big fish you'll have the best chances of catching are jack crevalle, bull redfish, king mackerel and sharks. The tackle recommended for king mackerel will do the job for all them and is well discussed in the thread mentioned by CarlF. We all look forward to having you on the pier and if you can find any regulars in the Fourth of July crowd, they will be happy to help you out if you ask.

J&M tackle sells a penn combo that is reasonably priced and will last you for many trips. They sell the hooks, sabiki's for bait, and wire leader you will need, too. Like Haywire said, there's plenty of folks who would be glad to help, just ask. But if asking around doesn't appeal to you, Pier#r on this forum is a pier and shore fishing guide. A pm to him might be a good plan, too, and one of the best investments you could make.

Would any of the reels we use for regular lake or river fishing work anywhere? I have a new reel for trying out on the pier, along with some weights, hooks, and leaders.

Welcome to the forum, Haywire is right, Bull Reds, Jacks and maybe a King are your best bet, and they all can be hooked with the same tackle. good luck!

Lots of set-ups for fresh water river fishing will work for catching larger fish on the pier, as long as their stated line capacity for 15# or so line is around 300 yards. Bass tackle is adequate for spanish mackerel, flounder, trout, etc. Smaller fish. Look at the video Fin posted from yesterday. It will give you an idea of what catching larger fish from the pier is like. If your stuff looks kind of like what you see there, you are set.

Speaking of Fin, be careful. You might end up in his next video. :)

How do I find the video he posted yesterday? Trust me if I catch a fish I won't be camera shy or scared of the video. Someone may end up in mine :p
