Welcome!
So I'm no expert. My best red bait so far has been live or fresh dead shrimp. I have seen several say cut bait especially mullet. Good luck. I would also recommend that you use the search feature to look up topics you are curious about, tons of information here. If you need any gear visit J&M for gear, bait, and advice.
Don't set on just red fish.....many are caught fishing live bait/dead bait fish for kings, always have a rod ready with cobe jig for a passing school if no live bait in the water already plus that will work for jacks, cobe's too....slots in the shallows any bait really live or dead
Welcome
The old guys who fish the shallows a lot catch plenty of slot redfish on cut bait---pretty much what ever is available to cut on.
When the bull reds show up hungry, a piece of paper towel or a chunk of flip-flop chunked into the middle of them will get bit.
Outside of that, you've gotten good advice. :)
A largish crab with the back ripped off works better than anything.
Does Vudu shrimp work its magic over there like in LA?
Not from the pier in my experience. They are too light to fish the pilings for flounder and the specs are hard to catch even on live bait. I caught a lot of undersized to barely legal specs from docks (under lights) in the lagoon and at Ft. Morgan using the Academy Mojo shrimp (3" new penny under a popping cork).
