Spanish in the bays we would just troll a gotcha, cast to the surface busting fish, this was for prepping for the next day offshore trip to use for bait.....moving up the food chain....jigs & lures would work too
My go to Spanish lure for trolling is a Clark Spoon, smallest they make, but always have something castable because they will go down if you go straight through them.
I can attest this is KILLER on trolling for spanish...

If you troll one of those tree rigs be sure to spend some effort getting the fish under control really fast after you bring them in the boat or they will make a tangled mess.
for spanish i always towed mcdonalds straws and tube baits cut from sunglasses tubes . kings , slow troll live baits ,hardtails and trolled a little faster , cigs with weighted duster rigs, shallow diving lip baits and in deeper water mans stretch 25's and 30's
Back in the day, for Spanish, I used Penn 209s spooled with 25# test on 7' rods. We trolled small clark spoons with a short single strand leader and swivel on an 8' 50# leader, then a swivel, bead and a 1/4 - 1 oz egg sinker. Never messed with planers, can hardly feel the fish, you fight the planer more than the fish.
For kings, we used Penn 113s spooled with 50# (our snapper rods) or 309s with 40# and the same basic rig with dusters, larger spoons, etc. We caught more kings on flat lines anchored over the reefs though. More fun on spinning tackle too.
