Hi all, I'm coming down June 25 for a week. Have a rental on Little Lagoon w/a johnboat. I pretty much did my research on LL and looking forward to mornings and evenings on it. My question is..what's in the surf? I have some teenagers and want to put them on some fish close to shore. Are there any whiting or pompano? Up north we catch them with sand fleas and blood worm fish bites...small hooks. Will this also be proper for Gulf Shores? Thanks in advance.
I caught a flounder and a couple of whiting swimming a white jig head with a white gulp ribbon tail
The same methods should work here but you can fish much lighter tackle than for ocean fishing most of the time with best results.Quote:

I'm here visiting this week, staying about 2 miles east of the peir. Between yesterday and today I've caught almost 100 fish strictly fishing from the surf. Using a red and silver gotcha plug. Good luck!!

Mostly lady fish and jacks. Did end up with a decent mess of flounder and pompano thought.

Reeling it almost as fast as I could while popping it every few seconds. Got out this morning right about daylight and they were schooling everywhere. At some points I was catching lady fish every throw
I through probably 50 times before I caught one. Turned out I was fishing that plug to slow. Once I started fishing it faster it was like someone flipped a switch on

The best method is to use a spoon to scrape the meat away from the skin and bones then boil and use to prepare 'fish cakes'.
They are probably the most prevalent gamefish in the surfzone from June thru late August.

You caught flounder on a gotcha?
If a flounder thinks it can ambush a tasty treat, it will. I've caught them on mirrorlures before---not that I'd go searching for flounder with gotchas and mirrorlures, but it can happen, just like me catching a king every month or so. ---When the moon is in the seventh house.
I didn't realize how aggressive a flounder could be until I saw the underwater footage on the John skinner YouTube videos.
While inshore fishing, I've had flounder come 3' up off the bottom to grab a lure.
Interestingly, I caught my first flounder "accidentally" on a Mirrolure down there a couple of years ago.Quote:
