Would like to have a king rod made
John G at J&M makes great Custom rods but sometime the turn around may be a little long do to the high Volume of business they do. Jeb Brantley aka The Original Pier Pest also makes awesome rods you can send him a a pm.
^^^^^ Jeb builds a nice rod.
John has some nice king rods in stock if you aren't hell bent on a pure custom. Prolly save yourself a few bucks too
I build a pretty good one myself, I haven't been building as long as John or Jeb, but I'll bet I'm cheaper than both, John sent me a pm about a business license, but I'm under 18 so, Mr. John if you happen to read this do pm me
Rodbuilder, The state doesn't care how old you are. If you're gonna be advertising for business you need to have a business license.
Tooting your own horn is not a way to make a good first impression on any customer base. Having humility will get you way further in business than being cocky. If you let your product speak for you, rather than trying to undercut others by advertising a cheaper price, business will find you. You also need to keep in mind that cheaper is not always better. If the market is saturated with subpar work for a cheap price, customers will come to expect cheap prices from all those in the industry. When they go to a builder who has been doing it for a while thats prices haven't changed, it will hurt their business. As far as the business license goes, Jeff is completely correct in his statement. The state doesn't care how old you are, or how much or little you make. They want their cut, and they will get it whether its voluntary or by force.
My best has been Rock and Reef located on HWY 59, Summerdale, AL. 850 748 9675
Ill say this ive bought many rods from differant people that builds them when I first came down here ,,,,and You get what you pay for.some times its like comparing oranges and apples
Unfortunately, sometimes you don't get what you pay for........Buyer beware. Do your research and, just like anything, buy from someone with a good reputation. I think you've got a couple of pretty good recommendations on here.
Not to pile on here, but building a custom rod is a lot more then saying "I want a King Rod". A good custom builder will take into account your preferred blank action, your physical capabilities, the reel you are planning to use, bait, style of fishing etc. In another words, the total fishing system for what you plan to achieve. The custom rod builder will then build the rod to meet those objectives.
So select a builder that will work with you on exactly what it is you intend to accomplish, then you will get your monies worth out of you custom rod.
Mobilebayfisher put that PERFECTLY, that is the difference between a person who builds rods and an actual rod builder, I personally put in 2-4 hours planning and marking the blank before ANYTHING goes on it, (and I am not trying to toot my own horn here) I'm just saying, anyone can throw together a bunch of components, expensive or not, but it takes skill and practice (a lot of practice) to make a real rod builder
The way you put that statement it makes it seem like no one on here is even on the same level as you. If it takes you 2-4 hours to layout a rod for construction, you need to reevaluate your process, especially if you plan on pursuing this as a business. It doesn't take skill and practice to build a rod, just to make it pretty. All your really doing is putting hoops on a stick and trying to make it pretty. Like I said before, a little humility will get you a lot further than being cocky.
You mean rods should look pretty
Ok KID. We get it. Obviously you are the only REAL rod builder. You must be. Your name even says so. This is ridiculous. The two MEN you are trying to undercut have been building rods longer than you have been alive. You need to take a minute and think about the things you say and how other people will perceive your actions. And honestly ive looked at your rods and to quote Shania Twain.
THAT DONT IMPRESS ME MUCH.
I may be partial to PP Custom rods but, I have seen him working and the attention to detail he puts in a rod is top notch. Can't say a whole bunch about other rod builders out there as I have not seen their work, only hearsay. Jeb will work with you to produce exactly what you are looking for. He knows the right questions to ask and how to explain the terminology in simple terms.
I'm not saying im better than anyone else, because im not, I was simply agreeing with Mobilebayfisher, and the reason that this is my screen name is because I really enjoy it, last post on this thread
To quote from the Good Book, "Let no man despise thy youth." How about we give rodbuilderESM a break? Anyone ever hear of constructive criticism? Every good rodbuilder has to gain experience and every rodbuilder had to have a mentor. John G had Frank Oakes and Jeb has John G. I haven't heard anything cocky out of rodbuilderESM. He is simply trying to drum up a little business. Everyone has to make the leap from hobby to business. If he needs a business license, OK, he's got the message. Get one. The kid is still learning and needs all the help he can get. So, great if someone decides to hire him to build a rod. Help him along.
Jeb makes some pretty good king rods I don't kno about rocks reef I never really bothered getting a rod from there but a couple buddys of mine got there king rod from there and says they are ok:-)
We need some luvin here...

I just make 'em for myself and for family. I call 'em "cussed 'em rods", cause every time my blurry eyes and clumsy fingers screwed up while I was makin' em, I "cussed 'em." I also use "cussed 'em" knots, baits, sabiki rigs, etc. :bang
If people judged my rod building capabilities by looking at my personal stuff, most wouldn't let me put a tip on a $6 Zebco rod.
