Awesome craftsmanship! Is it made from stainless or carbon steel? You guys use these instead of the ring nets or just for big fish? Just courios. Coming down first time last of April and want to learn about pier fishing there. This is a great forum! Thanks everyone for sharing.

Generally, fish are netted via pier net. However, some, Like King Mackeral, a pier gaff is used since the net is usually too small. On rare occasions, I have used a gaff on smaller varieties I'm planning to keep, but only if the wind and current make it almost impossible to use a net, since it keeps washing away. The gaff is a lot more stable in rough conditions. Again, only on fish I plan to keep. Doesn't make sense to me, to poke a hole in a perfectly good fish if your not going to keep it. Ironman has made and distributed enough gaffs that someone usually has one and will gaff it for you if you ask. So a pier nett will usually surface.

Prospector46......thanks for the kind word, they are stainless , as stated usually only used with kings (toothy fish) that can't be reeled up or safely put in a net..
...the first few trips years ago I brought a large landing net with handle removed tied with 3 lines to the main line weighted so the hollow tube sunk with netting.....till I decided to make a hoop ring out of stainless and added netting....I make what I can and able too (I enjoy it) plus it (they) are the way I want them.

Fshntime, Thanks so much for your reply. I am trying to learn a little bit before we come down the last week in April. Fished the Navarre Pier with my cousin (who is a local there) last year. Every area is different especially with the edicate and fishing methods. Hope to see you on the pier!
Ironman172. Thanks for your reply. I assume the 172 is for Local 172 out of Columbus, Ohio. I am retired from Electrical Wokers Local 369 Louisville, KY. I will be reading this forum until we leave most likely. THope to see some of you on the Pier the last week of April. Thank you guys for sharing!
Ironman172: Great design. I assume the lead adds stability and eliminates a lot of welding.
Adds stability and the proper weight(4lb-2to3oz), still welded prongs and rope eye (prefer tig welding it) easier clean up....smooths everything out ....the longer shank keeps the hand away from the danger end of the fish..
GS is a different atmosphere then Navarre and will require a fishing license (pier only out of state is 11.00+change good for 1 year aug31) plus your daily fishing fee 9.00 unless x military then 6.00....plus the people make the pier, you won't find a friendlier pier anywhere(for me it's like going to a family reunion )....and I have fished many....you are already ahead of the learning curve fishing Navarre
You are correct, I am retired also, but went back for a rigging company driving a semi, delivering the equipment (forks and cranes) plus when needed by costumers ,go out and operate too....thanks to the local brewery learning about stainless (welding) has come in handyQuote:

Not real pleased with the paint job, but sure can't change it now....that silver is hard to tell how much is on compaired to the silver lead background.....and not quite the same green as the jig....one was metal flake green vs disco green....DANG

Thanks to Mr. Wire for the idea of sewing with awl then top dressing with continuous clove hitch....clean and strong way to attach a solid braided rope....all of my Gaff's and net have it this way now....well almost all
