Problems with new Penn Fierce 4000
Last week I used the Fierce 4000 for the first time. It's loaded with 10# mono. Was throwing 3/4 oz Gotcha's and bubble rigs all week. Fairly quickly it started throwing small, tight knots on an irregular basis. Several were easily undone, but many required a complete re-tie above the knots. Any ideas what the problem is? Several days were windy but the knots formed regardless of wind conditions. I am stumped on this one so any advice would help.
Re: Problems with new Penn Fierce 4000
Line not spooled on correctly, i.e. in correct direction off bulk spool?
Too much line on spool?
I have to ask but it is on a spinning rod, right?
Also, out of curiosity, what kind of line?
Re: Problems with new Penn Fierce 4000
Spinning rod CR. The line is 10# Berkley Trilene XT monofilament. I hadn't really looked at it but it appears it's too close to the spool lip. I think it's too full. Would that cause the knots?

[/quote]Yes it can, multiple loops can pop off and tangle/knot.

I had the same issue not long ago Come to find out the Line was put on the reel incorrectly. It was put on from the top of the bulk spool and onto the bottom of the Reel spool or vice versa But it caused twist to be put into the line . Discard the old stuff and refill with new is the only cure

I know the best way is to have it professionally spooled, but that isn't always practical time-wise for me. I've been told to make sure that the line is coming off the bulk spool in the same direction as the reel is putting it on the reel spool. Is that all you have to look for or is there something else? The system I have seems to be working OK.
Re: Problems with new Penn Fierce 4000
That's all there is to it. Not rocket science. Just make sure it is coming off the spool same direction as the bail is turning.
Probably just a little too full on the spool. Throwing Gotchas and Bubble rigs can cause the line to have uneven tension as the lure is retrieved with a series of jerks. This adds to the knot problem.
I like to use Fireline on my spinning reels for gotchas and bubble rigs. You get very few line loops and when you do they are easy to untangle. Plus it casts a mile.
Re: Problems with new Penn Fierce 4000
I have a 5000 that I have used this spring and summer and have not had a problem with it. Like weagle and rich1 said, making sure it is spooled correctly.
Re: Problems with new Penn Fierce 4000
Thanks to all. Pulled old line off reel and respooled with new. Made sure it came off spool in right direction, matching clockwise rotation of reel. And ensured it was not too full. Driving down to test my handiwork this weekend. Cannot wait to sling a line.
