book review: "The Rise and Decline of the Redneck Riviera" by Harvey Jackson

Most of you may have already heard of this book, but I hadn't. I found this book in the library after reading about it in a local Alabama magazine. It's called "The Rise and Decline of the Redneck Riviera" by Harvey Jackson. It offers a history of the Emerald Coast and its development from the 20's till now. Its pretty good if you're interested in how the region was developed, great chapter on beach "renourishment", condo development, tourist development, Kenny Stabler, the Flora-Bama, the BP oil spill etc. However, I was really disappointed that there was not even a MENTION of ANY pier along the Florida or Alabama coast! I always thought pier fishing was the essence of red-neckedness...and I really thought that the piers at lest used to help the tourist industry? Still a decent read, especially since I didn't pay for it...
