Well Crap! I wouldn’t try to fish in that crowd anyway, but I hope they don’t blow a big hole in the pier deck again!

I just hate it cause we used to love watching them from the public beach, with the barge right out from us. There was plenty of parking and plenty of room, plus plenty of places to walk to and eat afterwards. I dont understand why they would move them so far down the beach to where there is a fraction of the parking and establishments to visit.
Doesnt make sense to me. We went to the Wharf last year and will probably do it again this year.
... to be followed by a marshmellow/smores roast on the octi ::) :D
I don't think Dawg will let them burn the pier down, but ya never know what will happen around fireworks :o :poke:
Wonder how much Tater charges to park and watch from the front porch of his house?
So, does the fireworks set up start on the 2nd or 3rd?
Not official but from a reliable source.
The Octi will be closed off early (7AM maybe) Tuesday July 3rd to begin fireworks set up.
The entire pier will close at 6PM on Wednesday July 4th.
Not sure of reopening times, will check today.

Hmmmm.... sure hope the hole isn't as big as last year when they are done haha. Forget that show, I like to watch all the tourists set them off from my front porch.

The pier management has their heads up their asses. They aren't considering the amount of revenue lost with over 36 hours to setup, then no telling how long to clean up and repair any damages. Then apparently nobody has considered how many people would pony up their two bucks to walk on to view the show from the pier if it was deployed from a barge. Imagine how much junk food, soda and souvenirs could be sold if a few concession stands were placed under the pavilion as well. All this lost revenue to make things easier and less expensive for the city and the pyrotechnicans. In one word DUMB.
Doubt this is pier management's decision. This sort of dumbassedness has to come from, at a minimum, regional level and maybe even state. The higher the chain you get, the further up one's a$$ it is possible to shove one's head. :spank:

The pier is to reopen on Thursday July 5th pending inspection and any repairs needed, Time is TBD.

Have you people thought about the pier management is smart. Like everything else, its about money, it could be BP, or the State, or the city of gulf shores are paying them to make of the loss in money with a profit.
Scuttlebutt sez the fireworks this year will be based in a two foor deep 'sandbox' to retard possible combustion to the wooden panels and absorb most of the impact from the mortars.
Let's hope!
One day wont kill me not to fish it :headbang: If you gotta fish that bad head east for one day you have fun :headbang: to many turd gonna be on the island for this guy :headbang:
I spoke with Teresa and Blaine about the other day and both said the shooters are well aware of the damage from years past and I dont think are willing tp foot the $$$ for the repairs. According to them, they have built huge wooden boxes filled with sand to prevent a burn through and damage.
I witnessed this same technique used at Bay Bears Stadium many times for 4 Jul shows and works great. Our (MFRD) big concern then was setting the grass and consequently the field on fire before the ball game....not good. If it is done right, it should work. We'll see tho.
Guys on another note...my wife is scheduled for surgery on the 5th. Please keep her in your prayers. Nothing serious or major, but surgery is what it is and any time they take you down, its dangerous. Thanks guys

Y'all know she's in our prayers!

Did anyone watch the fireworks from the public beach last year? How were they being that far down? We skipped to the Wharf last year. Prior to that we watched them at the Public beach every year and they were awesome. Seems like the pier is too far away, though.
Thoughts?
That pic above was taken in front of the Pink Pony (east side of GS public beach).
I think we'll just watch them from Mobile again this year ::) :D
I'll be doing my own show, but I'm still tempted to go down and watch the one off the pier. Never seen it even though I've lived down here for a few years. Wonder if traffic will be gridlock trying to get away from it when its over. Is there normally a huge turnout for the beach show? Hmmm....

Turnout is HUGE! What we do is walk to a restaurant afterwards and eat. By the time we are finished eating, all the traffic is mostly gone.
But looking at that pic of last year, that is about 5% of what it was everytime we went where they shot them off the barge.
