For those that dont do facebook, I read this morning that we lost another one of the good guys. Garrett Slaughter passed away last night. Another empty spot on the rail! This is a real shock for me. I've known Garrett for several years and know he will be missed by all. Rest in piece my friend...
WOW what a tragic loss of a young man. He was always extra polite to me and very patient when I asked him a zillion questions. RIP Garrett. Thanks fishntime for bringing this to our attention.

Boy, did he love to fish and nothing seemed to bother him
I met Garrett when I first started to visit Gulf Shores and the pier
One of the young pier rats when we met years ago but he was always polite to me and each time I visited he always said hello
There was nothing like watching Griffin follow him around, what a big brother he had
When I was there in May there he was, more grown up and darker hair (how does that happen)
Fishing wasn't the best but it gave me more time to sit at the tables or stand on the rail and talk to so many people
I got to talk to Jeremy a bit, fortunately was able to tell him what I thought of his son, a good kid, and we had more conversation about his life and growing up, he had so much ahead of him
I can't imagine how devastated you and your family are Jeremy
I wish you all the best in this trying time
He was one of the first locals we met when we started coming down and one of the reasons we keep coming back. He will be sadly missed.
I cannot imagine the pain his family is going through. My deepest condolences.
I'll never forget the day when it seemed like everybody but me was hooking kings. I was grumbling and he grinned at me and said, "Just keep on casting, Mr. George." I took his advice and just as he predicted, my luck got better. He was a better fisherman than I am. I will miss him.

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. (WKRG) — A man from Baldwin County is dead after crashing into an Orange Beach Police cruiser late Tuesday night. Friends and family are mourning the loss of a beloved local fisherman. For the many regulars that come to the Gulf State Park Pier, this is a huge loss. The Facebook group, GS Pier Rats, has tributes pouring in for the young manThis started late Tuesday night along Perdido Beach Boulevard near the bridge to Ono Island. State Troopers say a pickup truck driven by 21-year-old Garrett Slaughter crashed into an Orange Beach Police cruiser that was one of two already conducting a traffic stop. No officers were hurt but Slaughter was pronounced dead on the scene. State Troopers say Slaughter wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. Orange Beach Police say he was speeding and was about to be pulled over before the collision. Friends say at just 21 he was one of the most well-known and well-liked regulars at the pier.
“It’s absolutely devastating, especially those of us on the pier who knew him. I’ve known him for years and his whole family and it just tears a hole in me to hear that kind of news,” said friend George Carleton. Friends say he was good at fishing and never hesitated to help others learn the skill. Carleton called him “the king killer” because Slaughter loved to reel in king mackerel.
Sadness.... my thoughts and prayers go out to Jeremy and Griffin. I like to think he's scouting out the best fishing spots in heaven right now (and Harley is in the shallows telling him "nothing to see here...")
Garrett (King Killer) was a very well mannered young man that was always willing to help others. There's no telling how many fish he has gaffed or netted for his fellow anglers at the Pier! Although he mostly fished on the octi, he stopped in the shallows and fished for trout with me a few weeks ago. I will surely miss seeing him work a Looney Jig! Praying for his family!
Haven't been on here in over a year now and just logged on to see this. Ill tell you he was one of the first guys on the pier to help me and teach me a few things when I started fishing the pier a several years ago. I always looked for him when I would go down there. Really hate seeing this. Fella needs a memorial out there.
