How long should the leader be?
Everyone has their own preference, but mine are usually about three feet long from the bubble. It really doesn't seem to matter much as long as you don't get too far away from the bubble as it acts as an attracted in the water. Sometimes I'll even use a longer leader. That way, if I get cut off near the lure, I simply tie on another lure. Try it about 4' then cut off six inches at a time until you find what works best for you.
good fishing...
I like them around 2-3'.
Mine are about 18" and I have had success I would say. But that should be the minimum I would think. It's all personal preference though.
If people are scared to be next to you, then it's too long or your rod is too short.
Thanks for the tips! Yesterday I used a 3 ft wire leader because I was told it would keep me from getting cut off. Should I go with fluorocarbon?
What all does the rig catch?
Plain old 50# mono.
Bubbles are mostly used for Spanish mac, but also catch ladyfish, hardtails and bluefish.
How did you do yesterday, still debating whether or not to make the hour drive down tomorrow morning...
Nothing on the bubble rig. The day before yesterday a guy caught several on the rig by casting into a feeding school a fish near our condo. That is why I bought the tackle to make my own. I threw spoons, rattle traps and jigs into the same school with no bites. For a freshwater fisherman from Tennessee, it is hard to believe a fish would bite a bare treble hook with a piece of colored tubing for bait.
Can you use the rig if you are not seeing any fish at the surface?
Absolutely. You have to be in the right spot to catch Spanish from the beach but they will hit the bubble rig even when they are not dirctly on the surface. My best catches have been on a plain soda straw that I got from the pier house cut about 3" long.
Jacks , Reds and sharks as will bobos also hit the bubble and the straw so watch where you throw it.
