David is correct about the Hangout. It can be crowded and very loud. We always come the 3rd week in March and the area is crowded but usually cool enough to suppress any wild partying-at least on the beach. Gulf Shores even banned smoking on the beach this year and alcohol on the beach the last couple of years to try and tame the Panama City Beach crowd that they were expecting to migrate in. No guarantee that you won't see Haywire(topless-wearing a sombrero) crowd surfing with the coeds in Orange Beach if you get here before turkey season opens. One eighth of the octi will be elbow to elbow with sheep herders. Spanish MAY show up by then and maybe a stray king.

What's left of Panama City? Media reports of the hurricane were not encouraging but probably sensationalized. And that was the Weather Channel.

Panama City Beach (piers) came through the hurricane relatively unscathed.
Mexico Beach is the 'Disaster Area' however, but in the process of rebuilding...

My Brother in law and Father in law live in that area , FIL In Panama City Beach , BIL to the east of him in Panama City , We took him supplies 3 days after and to check on my FIL since we couldn't get them on the phone .
Panama City looked like a bombed out 3rd.world city . My BIL said they had winds clocked over 100 mph in his neighborhood , 100 year old oak trees blown down and driven through homes , he suffered only minimal damages to his house but the garage lost it's roof and every one of the Pecan trees were down or gone , he had some cell service with AT&T so we were able to find out what he needed and when we would be able to get to him his street was blocked by trees and parts of homes .
FIL to the west of him did much better with only a tree from the property next to him falling in his yard and clipping the gutter but all the flying bits and pieces the hit his steel roof put little dings in enough of the roof that the whole roof has to be replaced by Florida law , His insurance will take care of it , Same for my BIL. The Piers suffered minor damages that we saw on our way out of town .

We went back for New Year's and a lot of the downed trees were gone so you could get around better , Power and water were restored with in anywhere from 3 days to 4 weeks , Power crews were setting new poles and running new lines the old stuff was just being pushed aside , the Piers were open but not much fishing action due to Redtide but I understand that's not a problem now .

It was as bad as the Weather Channel said , It's going to be years before it's back 100% , Lots of people have left and likely not coming back , Same thing that happened in New Orleans were enter neighborhoods are still empty . So that's all I've got .
