Dixey Bar Starts on the westernmost part of the beach before it curves into the bay and extends for several miles to the SSW on the east side of the channel (parallel to the buoys). Usually when people fish there from the shore they do fish the deeper water at the tip, actually fishing the deeper water, not the bar, although sometimes the reds are more up on the bar. In my experience sharks are in the deeper water during the day and we have caught some nice kings in the hole on the west side from a boat.
If you had a east or northeast wind you could probably catch kings with a balloon float.
If I remember correctly, one year the winner of the Destin Kingfish Tourney ran all the way to the mouth of Mobile Bay for the winning fish. Biggest we have caught is 25 lbs, but I have had some USOs that took a lot of line real fast.
Is that King Mackeral. Can u catch them from shore?
No, you want to be near the SW tip, at the mouth of the bay or to the east ON THE GULF SIDE (sometimes) where the water gets shallower, at least that's closer to where we catch them in the boat.Quote:
Thanks for the reply. The spot near where the ferry departs/arrives, is that a good apot for Reds?
As far as kings, yes I mean king mackerel, I've never seen anyone catch them from the shore, but we have caught them close enough that a person from the shore could reach them with a balloon float and a wind from the east (current will drag you over the bar unless the wind is strong). You will need to stay clear of the boats. The ones we have caught have been from 8-20 feet deep.
Thanks, I fished close to a structure, old concrete blocks in the water. It was adjacent to the walkway from the fort just near the museam. Presumably I need to be further South? Once more thanks for the advice
Looking at Google Earth (or whatever view you can get, microsoft has one too) the Bar starts around 30.22464 North and 88.02690 West. To the east of there you are getting up on the bar and to the west and north you have a fairly good dropoff. The Bar itself extends several miles to the SSW (about 200 degrees). Sand Island Light is on the West side of the ship channel, the bar is on the east side of the channel and parallel to it. The channel is visible on Google Earth.
Thank you so much for your help👍
