Vibrio Vulnificus is present in all tropical and most temperate salt waters in the world. Locally it is most present in the summer in the northern GoM.
It is nasty and you do not want it, but most of the people who suffer catastrophic illnesses have compromised immune systems because of chemotherapy, transplants, or some other problem. To be extra safe treat any nicks or cuts with care - hydrogen peroxide or bleach washed on them immediately. If any signs of infection appear get to a doctor immediately if not sooner. Once it gets established you have a problem. Most healthy people can throw it off with treatment.
Edit: I could not get the link to work before I posted, but I had seen the advisory. The "fecal" bacteria was not found in Alabama, but everybody always has a little vibrio around in the summer - world wide in warm water. Vibrio is related to cholera and is the one usually referred to as "flesh eating".
I would worry more about the drive down to the coast versus vibrio. Unless you are immune-compromised
Wow, this is getting as many comments and as much coverage as CNN gives Hillary's dark side.
Turn out the story was complete bullshit:
Are beaches on the Florida Panhandle closed? Atlanta report causes panic; water advisories in place | AL.com
That figures!!! I have several friends here in Atlanta that will be in Destin next week!!! They were all in panic mode!!!
Thanks for the update Carl !!!!!!!!!!
Saw about the algae on National News last evening. Said water was released from Okeechobee to help flooding and contaminated waters downstream.
It's all Bush's fault!
Sorry, but it had to be said.
