Re: the nightmare of the summer
It would be really surprising if the bama rigs dont show up a lot this year on the piers. It is a hot fad right now....like swim baits and drop shotting and dozens of others before them. Some, like carolina rigging, have proved their worth and earned their place in our tackle boxes. They will require some careful fishing on the pier, but no more than any other person casting artificials from the octi when its crowded.
It would be fun to throw in the midst of the sabiki brigade with five big gotchas just to see what happens.
With that said, if I find myself on the pier hauling water and the guy next to me is hauling in fish on a bama rig, the only reason I wont be throwing one is if the stores are all sold out.
Just sayin. :-\

Re: the nightmare of the summer
Here is a full description. No wonder people are taking it seriously. I did not realize how much of a problem these are going to become--especially for the wildlife that will soon die from breakoffs, etc.
I have no love for this rig--requiring a heavy setup and 80# test for the light rig?!? Yes, 80# test is the recommended line!
It is only a matter of time before all states have a maximum hook allowance.
We can joke, but the 5-Gotcha Alabama Rig is GOING to be a reality this summer.
Just a matter of time before someone gets hurt, and lots of fish die tragically with these things wrapped around their bodies, and larger predators choking on them thereafter.
Just plain awful. Don't be tempted by the googanologists! Steer clear of the fatally named "Alabama Rig."

They are only $27.99 each on line!
http://thealabamarig.com/thealabamarig.htm
Here’s the quote from their how to section:
“We recommend that you use a 7' medium heavy rod and good high speed bait casting reel spooled with 80 to 100 pound braided line.” :guns:
Think I will order me a dozen before they are banned by Homeland Security! :3some:

Re: the nightmare of the summer
The video point is clear -- these rigs will be all around soon -- but how long they last is another question (fad or breakthrough?).
I can't wait for the tungsten head, titanium wire version of the rig -- that should set you back a chunk.
On the up side, your cobia rod should be just about right to cast one if you upgrade the line to about 80 pound.

Re: the nightmare of the summer
I was thinking of the cobia rod for BASS fishing, LOL , and you could be right if thrown for cobia. Also, if you use these for cobia you might be the first person on the pier to be able to throw across yourself with 1 rod. You'd certainly stand a good chance of catching every other line in the water as you drag back.
And I would really look at upgrading that hardware on the rig. On the other hand, who knows what catches the attention of a cobia, so several teasers with one arm trailing the baited hook might actually catch.

VG, the five way gotchas was a joke. At $4 a piece and $30 for the rig, you would be throwing around $50 bucks plus tax on every cast -- too expensive for most people I think. All I've ever heard anybody using on the rigs were swimbaits. Gotchas get fouled up throwing one -- I can't imagine five.
As far as tangling other fish is concerned, I don't see how this rig with swimbaits would be any more of a threat than throwing the big artificial baits with three treble hooks. Ditto on the danger to other people.
Googanologist? Doesn't that refer to a person who studies googans?oke1: Maybe "googans and their googanism" would be better? Just a thought....
I doubt I'll be throwing the alabama rig on the pier, don't own one and don't plan on buying one. I can't imagine how much work that would be in a day's fishing. But if I'm crappie fishing catching nothing and the guy with me is catching them with the alabama rig.....well, you know......
