Pier Rod??

I am sure this has been covered on here many times before, but I am new to this forum so cut me some slack. I see all of you guys fishing for King with 9' or 10' custom rods with the big stainless eyes. I want to buy one but the only place I can find one for sale is from the Half Hitch in PCB. I am ballin' on a budget so I can't afford to have a custom rod made for me right now, any advice so I can have some options other than the Half Hitch's Rod? Or if any of you have one you would like to part with? Thanks guys!

J&M has some nice custom shelf rods.....you don't need custom to have fun fishing the pier....reel with line capacity is most important for kings, but most other things .....med rods 7-8ft work just fine.....fresh water gear works just fine, just fresh water rinse daily that is on the pier

As noted ,J&M can set you up.
Also, BassPro has decent rods for under $60. I use one for my primary king rod.
7-8' is all you want, anything longer is too heavy and too long..

Ugly Stik has their BigWater series 7' or 8' spinning rods for about $59.

I made the mistake (when first started coming ) thinking I needed big and heavy..... (it's the ocean where BIG FISH live), well the spanish were on fire throwing a jig on basically a lg cat fish rod.....by the end of the day my arms were like limp noodles.....that never happened again.....seems less is best

John from J&M mentioned in a W5B thread they had a Profile SSPC701 for $60

I fish now with a 9' Daiwa sealine rod with a 706z with 50 lb braid, it gets the job done. I'm actually trying to set my dad up a king rig for this summer. I have another reel and I was gonna buy me a new rod and put his reel on the rod I use now. Might just stay with my current set-up and buy him a rod you all suggested for Father's Day. Thanks guys.

I would ditch the 50# braid.
The 706z is only rated for ~15# of drag.
If you crank it down to take advantage of 50# line, you may end up bending the shaft or stripping gears or worse. A
nd its hard as hell to break off when you need too, like when you hook a shark or a big jack you don't want to land.

My 2 cents: If you still want to use braid, drop down to 20# or less. And make sure its bright colored so other guys can see it.

The anti-reverse dog will be the FIRST thing to go on a Penn 706z in that case (IF you are lucky).
Like stated, they were not designed to pull near that much load.

8' rod is my personal preference for weight and balance, everyone is a little different but ounces count when you are on the rail for hours waiting on that one bite...

I'll do that whenever it wears out. I'll just cut it in the meantime if I don't want the fish, I don't really like the big braid now, but it was expensive so I want to fish it out.
