Pompano Jigs

Anybody use pompano jigs very much? If so, what kind, color, size, leader, etc. Also what do you think of the disc type weights for carolina rigging dead shrimp for pompano? One more question: Haywire mentioned buying fresh never frozen shrimp at a grocery store, is there a store that is opened 24hrs that I can buy some at 5 am? I make several one day fishing trips and usually stop at Fresh Market on the way to the pier but they are notorious for not being open at 5:30 on Saturday morning as advertised.

Winn Dixie doesn't open until 7:00.

I've never caught one using a jig, but many speak highly of a pink 3/8 oz. Most of my pomps have been caught using live shrimp/carolina rigged. Fresh market was open at 6 when I got gas last Saturday.

WD are IQF shrimp. Remember,shrimping season not even open.

Couldn't tell ya except to get some the night before at Fresh Market and just keep them in a sealed container in the fridge.

As with the Pompano jigs, I personally haven't caught any off a jig, but i plan too but everyone swears by a white head 3/8 oz with pink skirt...I'd probably tip mine with a piece of fresh dead shrimp (very small just for scent) or a berkley gulp sand flea.

In reference to the leader material...anything is fine as long as you keep it under 15 lb. mono, but I like to use and 18" Leader of 20 lb. Flourocarbon because I just seem to get so much more bites off of that rather than just plain mono. Its supposed to be invisible to fish, it might be, but It works for me. Steel leaders are a DEFINITE NO NO when pompano fishing haha, but any light mono will work, there mouths aren't anything to worry about.

I was there last Saturday too @ 5:30 but they weren't open. Several people were there waiting so the lady in the store called and woke the guy up that was supposed to open @ 5:30. He looked "Hungover" when he got there at about 5:50. Since I drive 2 hrs 45 mins from home to try and be on the pier before daylight I just have to wait if I want bait. That's the reason I was asking about pompano jigs because if they aren't open I can go on to the pier and use jigs.

I use the white,pink,and chartreuse and if no Pomp's are biting the Spanish will devour them

I'm in the same boat TUCK. I've grown accustomed to waking up in the wee hours of the morning just to make it out to the pier by dawn. I usually drive that extra few miles to J&M for bait, as I can always count on them to be open when they say they're gonna open :D.

I agree Snake, J&M is the best tackle store and I always stop in there every time I'm down there, may not be first thing in morning but sometime during the day I am going to J&M! John needs to open another store on Hwy 59!
