You really can't go wrong with those choices so get what you'll have confidence in I use Penn 4500SS as well as 5500SS and also Battle 4000 and 5000 and all work fine I'm a strong advocate of at least two rods though One for Kings reds Jacks etc and one for spanish blues etc I use Penn Pursuit II s Penn 4500SS and Battle 4000 for spanish etc and Penn Battle 5000 for Kings and larger fish
Use whichever you find more fun, the choice will not impact what you land at the pier in my opinion (assuming similar sized reels).
I have penn captiva 4000 & 6000 now, but know they won't hold up to much pressure or sand. What will last is my question...
Personally I don't care to fish with ANY reel model with holes on the beach.
IMHO it just increases the maintenance by letting more sand get in.
Let's see I've used Penn 4500SS 5500s and 7500s for over 40 yrs Caught 18-20 Lb Blue Fish on every cast at Cape Hatteras North Carolina as well as 25-30 lb what we called Channel Bass as well and picked up 4-5 lb Speckle Trout and Flounder in a bushel off the beach that ran up there to get away from the Blue Fish and never had a problem with them Don't make like they use too so doubt you can expect this unless you can find these but take care of your equipment and it should last for years
I love my battles, I have a 3000,4000,and 5000 had no problems out of any of them. even use the 3000and 4000 to bass fish with and with 20 pound braid you can catch most anything on pier with the 4000 model
What are some of your favorite models for surf fishing? I have recently started getting into it and am thinking about grabbing a new combo or two. I am not well educated on that subset of tackle... I know you can get sealed, submersible reels like the Stella, Torque, etc but is there something cheaper than that but still more suited to splashes and sand than your average reel?
