Yes but never seen a real big one and all were out of season.
Yep, what Tato said.
Much more likely to catch a keeper grey snapper.
Welcome to the Forum, Bob, You get up early!
Yes, three or four years ago, on the last day of snapper season, one of the regulars (James or Jimbo) caught one over ten pounds. I saw it a few minutes after he caught it. There have been a number of good sized ones hooked, but they dive right into the barnacles and cut your line.
Caught this one this past Sunday.
Didn't measure before throwing back but it was close to 16 inches.

Fiver, you also didn't identify the species before throwing it back. That surely looks to be a mangrove snapper, aka grey snapper.
Looks too red to be a mango.
That is what happens to mangrove snapper when they start getting some size to them, get darker red. I consider them to be the most intelligent fish I've caught and capable of learning to a degree. When and if this fish is caught again it will most likely be two feet long and the color of a wet red brick.
If it was a red snapper, you would see white on the bottom. Which makes their red appear pink. No white or pink, not a RS.
The guy from Indiana has a question that may be silly.........
Any chance its a Mutton Snapper?
