How many legal sharks will hit the deck tonight?
Two (2) legal sharks.
I say four legal sharks cease eating Mackerel tonight!
I predict 7
5:00 cst and 128 people online right now. Going to be a bunch more by 8:00!!!
Missing that camera rite about now :pirate:drunk
4 will be decked, some will be lost. 1st hook up will occur @ 2012 central standard time. The fish will be a 64ish lb blacktip named that goes by the name Xrapper...
Is Everyone on FB?
I'm with Chile I say 2 legal ones
I hope they all end up fatally gut hooked.
Probably will have a half blind Ranger with no depth perception telling them that every shark is too small.
I didn't see many sharks while fishing today, and there was a scarcity of bait, such as Spanish and ladyfish. Dark portents and evil winds.
Do we really know where they go at night?
The taxmen began to show up after you left... there were 4-5 blacktips cruising, half should be legal length for the night crew. One king as we left got slaughtered at the gaff by a trio of leathery free-loaders. Maybe they will hang around and hop an elevator ride to the penthouse 30' up.
Any of the Pier regulars draw a permit for tonight?
Sharpen those gaffs needle sharp and good luck!
I'll say 5 decked tonight, and three release poles over the rail.
WKRG has a live feed on FB.
around 8:14 one guy on the end hooked up and it looked like it ran right through the pillars and popped off quick
looks like their live feed timed out or they got bored
fox10 has one going live on fb
Looks like this has become an over publicized and ridiculous spectacle, perhaps deliberately so. At least that's how it appears on the Facebook feed. Hate to say it but I'm rather glad I'm not there. Just my take on it. If this sort of thing is what you like, more power to you. In any case, I hope everyone lands a legal shark.
Why did it seem like a lot of them had no clue...
Shark fishing from a boat is one thing.
From the beach another.
But from a pier has its own challenges...
Hopefully this will not discourage more 'experiments' of this nature to solve the shark problem at the pier.
Any updates?
On the effort? Fox10 Mobile showed an undersized shark being caught, netted, and released. I didn't see any other reports. When nothing happened in the first 30 minutes or so, I thought that it might not go as anticipated. But all those people! I won't ever go when there's a shark roundup!
This was just like all kinds of fishing---some days (nights) they don't bite. Now, if they'd turn us loose on a day when there was a good Spanish bite and the sharks were crawling all over each other, it would be an entirely different story. Yesterday, there weren't any sharks at the cleaning station when I cleaned my king.
Based on what I have seen fishing the PCB piers, those guys last night were highly undersized/unprepared in tackle. Had they hooked a shark of any decent size, they would have been taken to the cleaners.
I think the remoras overheard the conversations about "Shark Night" and spread the word to the men in gray suits.
Excellent graphics, FinChaser! I was just thinking about how great it would have been to have sold Gulf Shores SHARK T-shirts last night!
Anyone recognize that locals flag flying back there? Good Ol Jolly Rogers
I said they should have at least been selling Hotdogs and Hamburgers.
I whipped a good 6 footer with a abu 5500 with 14# mono and a CHEAP Shakespeare Durango rod with a pistol grip! However, it was mid week after a T'storm and I had practically the whole pier to myself. Started at the cleaning table, around the octi, halfway back to cleaning table and ended on the cleaning table side of the octi. Close to 20 mins before I broke him off due to lack of interest by both parties. All I needed was a gaff and permission.
This one could have been caught @ 6am this morning (looks 'legal')...

Based on what you've seen, seen or personally experienced?
Cause out of all the average sized Spinners, Blacktips and Bulls I've hooked into and fought to pier side before popping them off, none were more than a match for an old Penn 7500SS and 16# monp.
Not to say that would suffice for a 8' or larger shark, but we see few of those hanging out stealing fish and eating baits/ lures.
We've had a few biguns hang out before, but it's not the usual thing at all.
I LBSF and have the gear for the biguns and the pics to prove I caught them pushing 12'.
If I could shark the pier all night long, with no gear restrictions, on a Friday or Saturday. I would bring out the big guns, my modified 6/0W, and modified 9/0 and 12/0, and target those big sharks with big baits.
Bring my kayak out to the end of the pier and run half a Jack or big ray out another 200-400 yards.
But that's just nice daydreaming at the GSP.
