State records

Have any state records been taken down from the state pier since it re-opened.I was a little suprised to see that king record beat at 69 pounds plus.That is wahoo territory.

Trish Cluck broke the Pompano record.

I KEEP THINKING THAT BULL RED RECORD WILL GO DOWN COMING IN AT 45 POUNDS 4 OUNCES.

I had heard the a potential state record whiting was caught and filleted on the pier in 2010 ??? ::)
Supposedly it weighed almost three and a half pounds! :P

Seem to recall one of these current records was caught from the old pier...

It isn't going to happen anytime soon. At least not from the pier. Reds grow too slowly once they reach "bull" stature. The current schools that are being caught from the pier are in my opinion 5 to 10 years away from being potential record size.

Most of the "bull reds" caught in the gulf are barely half the weight (and age) of a potential state record.
BTW, that record fish was caught at the upper end of Mobile Bay near the mouth of the Mobile River.

I've weighed a bunch of those school reds lately and I think the heaviest was 24 lbs; although a few pictures I've seen might go into the upper 20's
A 46 lb red would be huge.

I don't see the record being broke from the pier, either.

My largest redfish was 42#'s caught in the perdido pass, and its head was as big as some of the reds we catch from the pier. It was nearly 4 feet long at 47 1/2".

I couldn't imagine any could live that long at or near the pier. 45-50#ers, if they exist in Alabama waters, will likely be in shallow water with lots of substrate where they can break anglers off around rocks, etc.

Just a guess though. Would love for someone to prove us all wrong and land one.

In other news, Jimmy landed a large redfish from the pier, and it was fatally hooked, so he gave it to my wife for a cookout we were hosting last week.

I couldn't believe it when I opened it up and discovered it was a MALE. Likely the largest male redfish I've ever seen. The otoliths put him at approximately 18 1/2 years old. Yet, in comparison, a female of that size would likely be half of the age. Maybe we'll see a monster bull red someday... just maybe.
