Super googans
There were a couple of real idiots practicing their googanism at the octi yesterday evening. I was drifting a bait off the southwest corner when an older man and, I guess, a younger relation set up shop to my left with, get this---a 10/0 ELECTRIC reel complete with car battery, as well as a decrepit old spinning reel half filled with heavy line.
I respectfully (really) pointed out to them that there was no bottom fishing allowed between the yellow lines and was soundly ignored. I let it go and continued to drown my LY while they cast a bait with a half pound egg sinker out and lay the rod on the deck while they tried to clear a backlash out of the 10/0, heck, maybe it was a 12/0.
That's when the first jack attack hit and in all the back and forth and confusion, the rod on the deck (right at the rail) was stepped on several times and the line on the sinker line was mysteriously severed. When things calmed down a bit, I politely pointed out to them again that bottom fishing was not allowed there, and even pointed out the big sign that says so. I must suck as a communicator, because all I got were blank stares.
About then, the second wave of jacks came through and I hooked a big one that wanted to fight back and forth across the front of the octi, which wasn't a problem except for guess who. They weren't ugly, just stupid---really stupid---couldn't get out of their own way, and I wasn't the only one following fish around. At one point, someone actually grabbed a rod out their hands to help me get by (thanks!), and I told them that this is one of the reasons that bottom fishing isn't allowed out there.
At this point, they packed up their gear and left, more, I think, from fear of being trampled than anything else.
I think I'm going to put the phone number of the pier office in the speed dial on my cell phone to alert the powers that are in charge of people like this. They are the ones who post the rules and are in charge of enforcing them. The regulars abide by them, as do most others, and the googans and idiots should be made to do so, too. I'd love to hear your comments.

A thread is ALMOST worthless without ....but I did get a good visual from the text ....sounds like they were shark fishing and should have been removed from the pier or banned.....just saying :boohoo:
Thanks for sharing the story
didn't TJ get banned..... for purposely shark fishing??

Re: Super googans
HAHA I seen that damn thing i was damn!! 1st thing i said to my dad why does the pier let people bring shit like this any ways?? i got pissed having to walk around some woman on a cart that keep driving up and down the pier 5-6 times in about Hr i said dont let me get in you way  how would the guy carry the batt and reel around to fight a fish haha only in alabama you see this kinda crap

Re: Super googans
also that park ranger guy with 80lbs of rent a cop shit on his belt should do something about it but he was to worried about what the pier rat kids was doing...

Re: Super googans
i would have been more entertained by helping him rig to hook a jack and watching then me hooking a jack...jmho

Re: Super googans
Well, they obviously can't read because the sign on the gate to the pier clearly states no reels over 4/0 in size allowed on the pier. Then the signs clearly stating no bottom fishing. :violent

No problem!
When are you going to start taking pics? If you have a smartphone, you can download the photobucket app and have your pics automatically upload to photobucket when you take them. Then when you get home, you can just post them on the forum.

Sounds like they didn't have a clue. Removed or banned? They weren't the only clueless party involved. They shouldn't have been allowed to enter the pier with the gear described.
The clueless probably don't know what a 4/0 is. Both parties of clueless, that is. I have noticed that one of the signs mentions something about a 4.0 reel, so the signs also add to the confusion. Besides that there are too many signs on the pier. If someone who's on vacation doesn't take the time to read signs telling them what to do and what not to do, I personally can't fault them.

I like the way you think Steve. Come on people, how hard must it have been to work a fish around them? Not too much of a problem when compared to other obstacles we face fighting a fish. I can't imagine the big bottom rig making a cast of any significant distance, so the line isn't much of any issue. The rig was probably not too mobile, so it was probably stationary. If I need to get around someone else and their gear, I'd rather go around them than have them move, since I know where I need or at least want to go and can't depend on others to move the way I want them to.

Re: Super googans
i really guess it comes from fishing piers with little or no rules or few rules...fishing around stationary tackle or sightseers does not bother the old heads or the more experienced as that is the way we grew up fishing..if i had a sail or a huge cobe i may get a little irratated but losing a jack or a mackeral is not going to hurt my feelings, i usually hand the rod off after i get thru with the customary hookup hollering anyway..i get more irratated at the resident tourans with the saltlife shirts and the 706's that think the know what is going on.. the back in the day guys from the 1990's...

Re: Super googans
The salt life stuff always cracks me up. It's like hunters who have to show you how serious they are by putting camo pattern on everything they own. I want to make one that has potato chips under the logo instead of a sea turtle or fish.

this guy in the green had out 4 rods and a bait bucket tied to the end of the pier and was a prick when asked to move.
-
Re: Super googans
see this is the kinda stuff that does not bother me,,who else wants that spot?? the state is not going to piss off every tax payer that is complained on..after all this pier is brought to you by people like this and the siteseers that get screamed at for being too close to the rail even when there are no fish around
-
Re: Super googans
Looked like a perfect opportunity for a "oops, my bad" cast followed by a "sorry man, I can't seem to get it together" cast or just don't let it bother you since it's at the bait hole. A straight drop is all you need to catch all the bait you need, he's not really in your way and in given time some other googan will make the errant cast for you.

Hell with a salt life shirt i got the Tattoo  they don't make a 5xlt haha

it is a loosely used term to identify a person that does not appear to know what they are doing,,alot of time it is used by resident googans that think because they live in the area they know more than others.

Steve is right, a pier regular can be a "googan", and I am living, breathing proof! :o

Re: Super googans
Gonna be there with the wife next week. It is first trip to the pier and the pirates upon it. Guess I better bring my googan sign. Missed about 3 pound bass here this morning so I already have googan tendencies.
-
Re: Super googans
The one thing that really sets a googan apart from an inexperienced fisherman is his inability/unwillingness to ask for or accept help from folks that DO know what they are doing. They assume they know considerably more than they do and are prone to take offense when their shortcomings are pointed out.
BTW, Fin is poormouthing. He is far from a googan. He likes to pretend to be one so he can get pretty girls in bikinis to pose for him. :poke1:

Re: Super googans
A problem with the term 'googan' is that it is used both for inexperienced fishermen AND/OR difficult people. In my experience, the two don't necessarily have any connection. I've encountered annoying pier regulars, tourists, kids and elderly with varying skill levels. When the term gets thrown around on the forum it often gets turned into a pier regular vs. tourist argument, when instead it should be about being respectful vs. rude. If the people around me are trying their best to be courteous, I couldn't care less if they are fishing for the first time. They have every right to fish on the octi. Even if they are holding their spinning reel upside down.

Yeah, I've heard how lately the "pirate clique" has really been running people off. ;-) LOL
Couldn't agree more with your assessment.
Give me a 'newbie' anyday who wants to ask questions and see how it's being done
over some loud-mouthed 'know it all'.
I don't care where anybody lives or comes from, it's how they act and treat other people that matters!

Re: Super googans
I think yellerhammer5 and divedeep have a real good handle on googanism. I think it is those who are unwilling to learn and I am fully aware that I am capable of incidents of incandescent stupidity which qualify me for the googan club, but I try not to live the life full time.
There was a young man from Dallas on the pier this evening who hooked a big red and obviously was at a loss as to what to do, but he had the good sense to say so and I helped him adjust his drag and a couple of other folks helped him follow his fish. When the fish was netted he was grinning so wide I was afraid the top of his head would fall off. I don't consider somebody like that a googan.
-
Re: Super googans
Anybody can be a googan, I know I must qualify on some occasions, some times you just can't do nothing right. I've discovered though it makes a huge difference in wanting to get along with people and just having the right attitude. Its all about having fun with friends and family, and that's what pier fishing is to me.

the peeps that came up with the word googan have bad attitudes and don't want to get along with others,, i would say they would dissagree with softening the meaning of the word..

Re: Super googans
The Urban Dictionary defines a Googan as a: lowlife shore fisherman who baitfish typically without a license, regard for regulations, and etiquette towards other people, especially other fisherman following the rules.
-
Re: Super googans
Here's my take.
There's plenty of these "googans" from the get go.
Then you have Joe Blow that's planning a vacation to GS and would love to be able to catch "something big". He has minimal or no pier/salwater fishing experience, but he's a wiz at using the Internet so he decides to learn before he goes. He stumbles apon this site and starts to read up and learn. He makes a few post asking for help and he's quickly invited out to "catch that big un"
I'm not complaining cause tourist make up the economy down here. Just remember before you complain, these so called "googans" are helping the economy down here in one way or another. They were probably invited out to the octi via this form.
There's plenty of people that I'm sure would rather to have to deal with a "googan" than doing what they're doing.

I will be up there Sunday morning. I have to go to J&M tackle on saturday to grab some lures. Does he sell live bait too? I will definitely be asking for help... I'm a bass fisher not a salt water fisherman...lol. :poke1:
