Best lure
Gentleman,
If you had to fish everyday at GSP and could use only one lure for the rest of your life, what would your choice be, what color pattern is your favorite, what size and weight is it, what style, brand, and size hooks would you use ?
I am very new to fishing and every time I look in a catalog I look in a catalog I find something that looks great to me but might not look so great to the fish......
Thanks in advance for your help in narrowing my choices down.
Thanks,
Chuck

Re: Best lure
Spoons and jigs have always caught anything that swims.... What works for someone may not work for you though, and the other way around. Experimentation= knowledge... Don't be afraid to use freshwater stuff too.. You may wanna change the hooks and split rings though ... I gaurentee there isn't a commonly targeted species that will refuse the right jig in various colors and sizes, I loveeeeeeee using 1/32 and 1/8 ounce crappie flies for sanish

You can buy them at J&M or you can build them yourself. Ironman172 has pics posted on the link I've posted below. Scroll down to the ones hanging from the rack.

Basic bubble rig setup:
6"- 8" pre leader with a swivel on either side of the bubble,
24" - 30" main leader with lure attached to end.
The original designs used a white crappie jig or McDonald straw with a #4 treble hook.

Later modifications were to use a 3" piece of bright colored rubber tubing (sunglasses strap),
and adding a few BB splitshot inside the bubble as rattles.
Also I add 4" of 27# single strand leader above the treble hook to help prevent cutoffs.
Never used pork trailers (pigs don't live in the gulf though some visit there occasionally ;-)
But a 'jig & strip' combination can be deadly on flounder and redfish.
Can't beat a strip of FRESH cut mullet or stingray belly behind a 'Looney Jig' and drug around the pier on the bottom.
In mid-January sheepshead are the most likely quarry.
Occasional whiting, bluefish, black drum, redfish and a rare flounder or pompano.
Use a treble in situations like Peaches mentioned (fast fish slashing at bait) like mackerel fishing,
or on most fast moving lures, or for fish with a large gaping mouth (speckled trout and slot redfish).
But the fish can get down right skittish when the water is clear so smaller hooks and terminal tackle may be a factor in success.
Hope this helps!

Re: Best lure
Casting practice The other night in a drunken stupor , I found one of my EX-wives credit cards and thought to myself " What can I possibly do make her life more miserable".
The results were I bought myself a new rod and reel, an Avet MX reel and a Breakaway HD-X rod.. This rod is longer than my trailer is wide.....
This AM.went to the local football field to practice my long distance casting....
Now remember you cannot get a birds nest or backlash with the MX MC reel ( it has magic cast).
I was getting good distance for the first time out,50-55 yards with a 4 oz weight. It was below 30 degrees at 0800 in Atlanta this AM, so freezing to death, I was going to make one more cast and really put some muscle into it.
I reared back and let that baby rip.....it went about 20 yards(at the speed of sound, my 4oz weight, in orange tennis ball). Then it snapped off my line, and the tennis ball kept on going.
Between my hands was the largest birds nest ever created.
At that point I just said to hell with it and walked back to my trailer park.
It ain't as easy as it looks!,,,

Re: Best lure
Iv always wanted to get an avet.. But have always even a little hesitant also.. Especially when needing a quick cast to a fish that pops up, spinning tackle is the way to go.. But I must say, you sir, have one sweeeet setup

Re: Best lure
Don't take any of it personally. Ask your questions and be gracious and thank all who offer advice - whether you intend to take it or not. One thing you'll find on the pier, is that common sense and courtesy go a long, long way. The folks on the pier that don't need to ask questions represent a very small minority of the total number that fish. Although the percentage that incorrectly THINK they don't need to ask questions is considerably greater. :poke1:
Me personally - I'm never shy about asking what someone is doing or how something should be done. Sometimes you get an answer and sometimes you're told there ARE NO FISH IN THE SHALLOWS, or you might be told the Spanish are hitting on the end.
:boohoo:

Re: Best lure
Peaches,
That new rig in my hands is a little like putting lipstick on a pig!!!!!
It looks so easy, to be so hard. From now on I'm going to use what you boys suggest. You guys really have your act together, and thank you for helping me get mine together.

Re: Best lure
My go-to set up for any pier, any time if I could only have one would be a 7 ft medium spinning rod, spinning reel with 12 lb mono and a Chrome/Chartreuse Gotcha plug. I can fish the entire water column from just under the surface to bouncing it off the bottom, Drop it straight down and jig, cast it against the wind, work it in strong current and cover a lot water quickly.
See you at the range Chuck.

Weagle,
You need to wear long pants while fishing, those legs will scare women and children off the pier.
See you today, I'm going to start shooting at 1000hrs.

Re: Best lure
Nice to see someone using one of the old Cardinals. I always liked those reels.

Re: Best lure
going to start making and tying some more jigs here soon, well once hunting season is over....kinda like the loonies....
there were a couple guys from Michigan that were making there own gotcha lures on the old pier out of arrow shafts..... made a mold for the lead head and added reflective tape for the color on the shaft....worked pretty good and only had (as I recall) like .25 a piece in them....I may try my hand at this, but would rather just throw a jig anymore....and seems a lot easier to make for me

I can't answer for him.....and they do look great....He lives in Missouri I think and visits once in a while like me....not all of us are fortunate to live on the gulf coast
I had saved that picture he posted from a while back for my own jig making....mainly the color(pink) and jig head pattern....trying to find some similar for the pomp jigs....I am still trying to learn and have something to do in my retirement years to prepare for the next trip to paradise :fishing: :headbang:

Re: Best lure
Thanks Bill for the compliments but I have to give the credit to Obie/Tiderider. I learned most of what I know about making jigs from him. Chuck, I haven't really tried to sell them. Work has me on the road and busy as hell right now so I don't have much extra time to mess with it. I usually leave the selling to the locals. Ben Arnold sells jigs and there are a lot more down there that can fix you up. I'll shoot you a pm if I get a break in the next month or so though. I usually end up giving more away than I sell while I'm down there. Looking forward to spending some time around Navarre mid April!

Re: Best lure
I am way late on this post but I don't have just one favorite lure. I use several different lures, what works one day might not work as well the next. But to answer your question, I use Yo-Zuris, Looney jigs and Spro jigs, all kinds of twitch baits like Rapalas, and last but not least, a Gotcha(silver with chartreuse head).

Re: Best lure
i like a 2oz surf spoon for the big stuff. and a 1/2,3/4,or 1oz white loony jig for everything else. If you want to spend the money, a yozuri lure (or a bass pro shops brand of the same basic lure) with a natural look(darker back, white stomach) or a red head and white body is arguably the best all around lure out there
-
Re: Best lure
Thanks for the suggestions Rodbuilder.
What kind of 2oz surf spoons do you like?
Chuck
-
Re: Best lure
I like the larger 1-1/2 & 2-1/4 oz, Luhr-Jensen Krocodiles in Green or Blue Mackerel.
The Jacks and Bull Reds sure do like them too.

Define "cheap." :) The only "cheap" motels I have found are in Mobile or PCola -- as in $60 a night or less. Get much less and they are too dirty and/or dangerous for me to sleep there. FWIW.
