Alabama Cuisine

I spent a lot of time working in Wisconsin and enjoyed the numerous supper clubs with the bar at the entrance
where you place your order and sit at the bar till your food is ready and then go to the dining room. Great steaks!!!
Prefer down home cooking such as; gumbo, oysters on the half-shell, soft shell crabs, boiled shrimp, stuffed flounder, Conecuh Sausage, pecan pie and strawberry shortcake to mention a few. Most any Gulf seafood.
Oh yeah, southern fried chicken and tater salad :cool:

FYI, if you are coming south on I-65 there are two must-stops.
1. Preister's Pecans at the Fort Depoit exit.
2. Conecuh Sausage at the first Evergreen exit.
Both places have samples before you buy, and you will buy!

Grilled Conecuh sausage with spicy mustard...puts a beer brat to shame. You may have to chase it with a couple of Lipitor because you will go back for more and it is slightly addictive. They ship factory direct to your doorstep too, so when you get back home you are still able to get your fix.

Royal red shrimp are a must-try and Gulf Shores Steamer at San Roc Cay in Orange Beach does them beautifully and they don't overcook them like many other places will.

First time I went to Colorado I ordered it and the girl looked at me like a crash landed there from another world....they also are not too keen on grits either. I'm going to Nebraska this summer I want to see how they react there.

I ordered sweet tea at Le Cirque in New York City. They brought me tea with what tasted like cranberry juice in it.

Wow this is all great stuff thanks. Whats the preferred drink of choice down there? Southerners like bourbon etc right? Any good beers? I will definitely have to stop at those 2 locations off of 65 for some regional fare. Some of our Chicago cuisine: deep dish pizza, italian beef sandwitches, hot dogs without ketchup (seriously ketchup on hotdogs is for kids ONLY). Having been to a lot of places and loving food I find these discussions really interesting. Where's the best place to get sweet tea in Gulf Shores (and can I get it by the gallon at Win Dixie or Walmart etc...). Looking forward to shrimp and grits, fresh seafood, beignets, cajun/creole food etc down there. 56 days til I hit the Gulf cannot wait.

Does anyone on here have any foods/other goods that are hard to come by that we get up here i could bring down?

Any restaurant serves sweet tea. Buy you a gallon of Milo's at any grocery store-it's made in Alabama. Also try a slab of Dreamland BBQ ribs or take home a quart of their sauce.

Budweiser beer goes good to wash down boiled mudbugs or shrimp, or with raw oysters (in "R" months only).
Low Country boil (with shrimp or crawdads) MUST include Baldwin County red potatoes and silver king corn (NOT queen).

Must do-s: Dew Drop Inn hotdog, Krispy Kreme donuts (HOT NOW ;-)
also fried softshell crab, fried crab claws, Grand Bay watermelon (In July), and of course West Indies Salad!

BTW, "cajun" is not the same as "southern"
just sayin ;-)
