Wondering if anybody has been on the Octi lately can give me info on the lights. Have they been repaired yet?
I know as of Friday only 3 of the six down lights on the shallow end were working
Just got an email back from Greg Lein in Montgomery and he said he would check on the status of the lights. Said no decision has been made on the sharks yet but he did mention the cleaning tables again. In my opinion taking out the cleaning tables at this time is not going to fix the problem. The sharks didn't leave when the pier was closed for the repairs after the hurricane.
E-mailed back and forth with Louis Williams with GSP and he said they have a plan for getting the lights on the pier repaired. Hoping it gets done by middle of March anyway.
As we all know, maintainance on the pier is poor. Lights still don't work since Nate came through and now we have the added problem since the freeze, of a lack of water at the cleaning tables and "T" bathrooms. Can't understand why all the money goes to building projects at the park, but none to the pier. All the comments and calls to those in power don't seem to make a difference either!
I sure hope everyone expressed their concerns about the maintenance as you stated when they filled out the survey. It seems to me that as much work needs to be done on the pier we should be seeing somebody out working on it full time and keeping up with all the problems."Lein, Greg" <Greg.Lein@dcnr.alabama.gov>; "Grant, Rob" <Rob.Grant@dcnr.alabama.gov>; "Guinn, Michael" <Michael.Guinn@dcnr.alabama.gov>; "Coker, Landon" <Landon.Coker@dcnr.alabama.gov>; Gulf StatePark <Gulf.StatePark@dcnr.alabama.gov>; "Conway, Mathew" <Mathew.Conway@dcnr.alabama.gov>; "Williams, Brent" <Brent.Williams@dcnr.alabama.gov>; "Jones, Kevin" <Kevin.Jones@dcnr.alabama.gov>

Subject: Re: Lights out on the pier at Gulf State Park Pier. This is the list of people that I contacted about the problem of the pier lights feel free to send them your opinion of the problems.
I believe Pier#r mentioned the 42012 Buoy info being out. I checked back on the recorded data and it looks like the last recorded data was Oct.27 2017. Yea it's time it was repaired also.
Thanks for following up with this problem. I will email some of your contacts also - I hate the extra drive to Navarre, but it is nice not to have the sharks, and to have water available. The lights are a great plus for GS, but when they aren't working ????
Relax guys the waters back on and the lights will be taken care of in the next few! As for the fountains at the t I can't say!
They have been working on the water 'hard' every day...

Like I say the squeaky wheel is always the one that gets the grease.
This is so sad. Such a great resource and it's going to crap for a lack of simple maintenance.
Is the lack of proper maintenance due to a lack of funds? Or is it just poor management? Are there any other possibilities? If it's funding, I have an idea or two. If it's poor management, then maybe they need a full-time maintenance guy (assuming they don't have one).
Odds are they are trying to navigate the state purchasing process to get replacement parts.
Even emergency purchases are now a nightmare for state agencies due to changes made in the name of "efficiency" under the Bentley administration. Its done nothing but slow things down and we spend dollars to save pennies.
Of course the Park has a full time maintenance supervisor & crew, but they responsible for the entire park. They do their best to keep up with everything. If the legislature hadn't sucked Parks Division dry for years to support other agencies, they would be in a lot better shape, but people tend to forget about that fact.
Thanks for showing that picture, Pier#r! I see a wall that needs sandblasting or something! I have a question for you or anybody - How do you all empty your ice chest when you clean it at the cleaning station? You spray it down and you need to dump the water out -- how do you do that with no drain-area?
Pretty much what Carl said-cut the crew some slack guys!
The green stains could be removed pretty quickly with a gallon of bleach and a pressure washer. The cleaning station drains aren't very effective at all. A few redfish scales or Spanish guts stop them up and then the water stands on the cleaning tables until someone sprays them off-which makes the decking slimy and wet. A nightly spray down with a bleach, peroxide or copper sulfate solution would eliminate the algae growth. I don't know if the water that drains off the cleaning tables is supposed to drain into the water under the pier or into the wastewater system but most of it ends up on the deck and seeps under the pier. I do try to dump my cooler wash water off the side of the pier.
If they are going to mess with the cleaning station, one easy improvement I would suggest is to tilt it so water runs off. That might mean re-arranging the troughs, but the water ponding on it seems pretty nasty at times. Sunlight is a great disinfectant, but not on ponded water.
Why not just put a piece of aluminum expanded metal under the cleaning tables then wouldn't have to be washed to edge.
I feel for you fellas that buy year passes.
Just called and found out no lights on the Octi yet. Been 4 months now curious as to what the hold up is?
If you are that worried about a bathroom and a sink stay at home! Pier fishing is about getting your eyeballs 20 to 30 feet above the water to see what's going down! If you're a brain dead jelly bone who sets his rod down all the time get your own boat and put extra holders in! You guys are missing the point big time! Be thankful that you have a pier that accommodates hodads and novice pier fishermen! Or you could go try P cola pier mid season and see how that works out for you!
They are "special"...

I imagine that wiring lights on something like the pier is not something they would let regular maintenance do, which might mean bids have to be taken from licensed contractors.
Probably half of us think we could do the job (I do) and half of that half might kill somebody.
I'm sure that's the deal, but again, four months SHOULD be plenty of time to solicit bids from licensed contractors and get the work done. As for thinking we could do the job - not me! I would SO electrocute everybody with my "handiwork"! Possibly the sharks, too, so there'd be that bonus!
Not to over complicate things, but I was on the pier yesterday and it looked like there were some new lights mounted on the pier pointed down (hanging on conduit about 4 feet under the girder) towards the water, probably not wired in if they are in fact new. But my point is that these lights looks like they would be in a wonderful position to tangle lines if someone was trying to fish under the pier or drag a good fish out from under.
I'm not known for noticing peripheral things - matter of fact I'm known for wandering in a bit of a fog as far as peripheral events or items (I can focus). The lights may have always been this way, but I ask, has anyone noticed that they have mounted new lights under the pier?
Never realized there were so many night anglers at the pier-especially on the end! I do a lot of squid fishing and the only person I ever see out there is Roger As for the shallow lights if the first 3 are working it's fish on! I'm not sure you guys even know what you're complaining about! The pier ladies are passing out the S A D pamphlets up at the shack if that's the problem! Tight lines!
Don't forget, this is no longer a "Fishing Pier", so don't call it that!
The park brain trust is quick to remind people that it is a "Fishing and EDUCATION Pier!" Maybe they don't plan to hold night classes and don't need the lights.

Nothing to do with the “Park brain trust” and everything to do with the requirements of the funding source used for the rebuild. CIAP rules required a significant education component at the pier or those funds could not have been used. That’s the bottom line.
Don't care if they fix the overhead lights or not. My complaint is the down lights if you've ever been on the pier before daylight you would know how they attract bait and without them no concentration of bait.
To all those wondering:
Nothing has been repaired or added as for as the lights go. The lights were special made for this pier and had to be manufactured again to replace them. Then, new wiring and lights will be installed by the original contractor who built the pier. Should be accomplished sometime toward the end of this month.
Still, 4mo. Is a long time. We all know how long things take when it comes to the pier. We'll see what happens next....
My question still is if the lights are that hard to get why not have a couple of spares on hand. I spent 4 years in the Marine Corp and even we kept spare parts even though we weren't suppose too. The pier staff took up all the garbage cans and benches and signs before the storm and they are easy to replace. Why not pull all the down lights so they don't have to be replaced. We could probably get a volunteer crew to help pull them before a storm if they would allow it.
By looking at the way the down lights were installed don't see how it could take more than just a couple minutes to pull one.
Does that include unwiring? Or is there a plug?....wouldn't panels have to be remove to gain access? I never really have noticed the lights, so can't comment to much, that is why the questios....my time is usually day light hours and if early enough. I bring a light or head lamb
