Looks kinda messy out there...I'm going to the lagoon at the end of my road in just a few to see how high the tide is.

That doesn't look good. I hope the sections that have been removed will be enough to relieve the pressure. :-)
I wonder how many remora are going to be found sucked to the bottom of the pier.

If that keeps up, I wonder how much of the pier will be found on 2nd Avenue :-\
If only they could figure out how to use hurricaines to power-wash the TOP of the pier. Maybe if we flip over every other deck plate and alternate between storms. :poke: :poke:
Here are a couple more from fb about an hour ago. Not pretty!

She sure is taking a pounding... :wall: :poke:
OBch Bouy 42012 is showing wave heights of over 18 feet!
http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/show_plot.p...time_label=CDT
@ 1:50 pm Bouy 42040 (64 nm S of DI) registered a wind gust of 71.9 knots ??? (82.7 mph)
@ 3pm the weather station @ Ft Morgan reported a 61 knot wing gust (over 70 mph) :o
At least the barometer drop had leveled off.
http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=fmoa1
Hope it doesn't get any worse! :-\
ugh.... looks bad...but she will hold... she is the rock!!!
Am i the only one worried about the bathrooms 1/2 out

so if it does hold and is ok how long do you tink it will take to put back in one piece
Hmmm, it's all problematic at this point so I am speculating...
Supposing the swells begins to decrease a little Wednesday pm it MAY be safe enough for them to get out there Thursday to BEGIN the damage assessments to the railings, infrastructure, etc.
The waves aren't forecast to really calm down until Sunday
So it could well be early next week (remember Monday is Labor Day holiday) before they even begin to inspect the pilings (give them a day or two for that).
Supposing the structural inspection finds no problems AND they begin replacing the panels and railing damage over the weekend they MIGHT be able to reopen by Tuesday or Wednesday (next week).
IF there is ANY structural damage found all bets are off. It could be a month, or six or a year or more :-\ ::)
I sure hope that doesn't happen !
BTW, despite the astronomical low tide is approaching the water level along the immediate coast doesn't seem to have fallen much as it has inshore.

I fear once the incoming tide phase begins after dark tonight the sea level will rise even more.
Also the waves at the bouy 42012 have actually INCREASED during the day to over 19 feet! :o
The report @ 5:40 pm showed a wave height of 16 feet.
http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/show_plot.p...time_label=CDT
Let us hope and pray that trend continues and the waves drop below the 15 foot threshold that can cause damage to the pier.
Maybe thursday I can cast into the surf and snag a piece of wood or something at least i'll be fishing, thats what I came down here for

I finally got out at 3:30 to get a few pics and a video. Stay turned, I’m working on the uploads now.
I will put them in this thread to keep most of the storm stuff together.

The water in the Lagoon is high.
Once they sound the 'all clear' and reopen the roads the water level will drop back toward 'normal'.
THAT would be a good time to be @ the pass ;-)
:fishing:
Thanks Pier#r that's like a 1/4 mile from our condo, if your talking about Perdido Pass?
Just saw on facebook the end railing is gone
Here's a link to the FB page. YUK! Hopefully it can be repaired/replaced quickly. :-)

That is not the pass he is referring to. He is referring to the pass that flows out of Little Lagoon in Gulf Shores.
I hope that the pier only receives cosmetic damage and not structural damage. The fall runs coming up. Still got a lot of fishing to do.
Take time to break down ya reels and clean them nothing else todo :wall: :fishing:
A bit of good news from management on FB:
"...We have the sign safe and sound :). The Pier manager does plan to mount it a little lower this time."
Be shocked if it is reopened in 2 weeks. Betting a month minimum given inspection time and typical state bid process
for damage.

These will be the last pictures of the night and they are the ones you have been waiting on... the end of the line. Overall, things look good. A couple of blow panels were knocked out and the railing on the end is pretty much gone, but the electrical (as demonstrated by the lights) is in good order.
For the most part I consider us lucky, I'm glad we didn't take a direct hit. I've seen way worse.
They should redo the end like Navarre pier with the gate fence that wont wash away :headbang:
Sorry it took so long, but my damn power went off for about 1 1/2 hours right after my last post.
8-28-2012 Afternoon Storm Photos and short Video
Here we go, the pics are a bit blurry in some cases do to high wind and telephoto lens and they look like black and white, but are really color. It was crappy out there and didn’t get out of the car much cuz shorts and a t-shirt aren’t much defense against the blowing sand.
After I shot the stills of the pier, I started shooting a video and it got cut short by the park Rangers; you will hear the siren at the end of the pier portion of the video as I was run off.
Lake Shelby white capping pretty good

Nice pictures of not-so-nice effects. :boohoo:
Fin---That's the best news coverage of the area I've seen. Looks like the old Rock is taking a pounding but may be reopened in time for the October action. The sooner the better. Thanks for taking your camera equipment out in those nasty conditions.
Fin - GREAT GREAT GREAT job on the pictures. Thank you for getting out in the bad weather and taking them.
Also, thanks to everyone else that has posted pictures. Again, GREAT job.
We all appreciate it very much.
Steve - Tuscaloosa
Great update Fin.
Thanks!
Rode over to the pier and from a half mile away things look the same as in the pics,so that's good. The Gulf appears to be calming down a little.Being there is little damage to the park in general all we can do is hope they take priority on fixing the pier.
Thanks for the pictures and information. I come to this page to see what's really happening instead of depending upon the news media coverage. Sad to see the damage to the pier because it will probably be several weeks before it reopens. With all of my many years of trips to the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area I can feel myself standing in all the positions where photos were snapped. Thanks to the pier staff for the panel removal actions which probably kept the damage from being much more severe. Has anyone seen any information on the Four Season Fishing Pier? It is about two feet higher than the state pier. I plan on being there in early October for a week.
Great job everyone.... Stay Safe........Thanks.......
