Ok I have read the tips an tricks, an found that now I am not sure what reel to buy or use because I normaly use braid on my rigs. An it seems most of you prefer mono, I was curious as to why. Oh an thanks for all the help so far. Can not wait to get down there only 9 more days to go. Oh ya I got a kayak now an was thinking of using it on littlelagoon or maybe the surf.
PS forgot to tell you the reel I was thinking about getting is a 4000 series penn battle with 15pd braid.

4000 series reels would be fine for Spanish, specs & reds. But a little light for kings, especially if you put it on a properly sized rod to balance out the combo, IMO.
Get a 6000 and load it with 15# mono and put it on an 8' king rod.
Most people don't like braid because it has no stretch, tangles like hell and cut everyone else's mono when you get crossed.
I personally don't think its worth the money unless your throwing crankbaits & worms for largemouth bass.
I like braid when going after big fish but the main problem on the pier is most braid is dark colored and you cant see it so its hard to keep up with where your bait is when drifting a bait.
I use it for backing on my king reel under 250 yds of mono and a reel full on my ling rig. Also on both my skinny water reels --prefer the feel and also for abraision resistance for those that go under the pier or into a piling.
I put braid on my sabiki rig. I can feel the tiniest LY biting, while still being able to cross a hardtail's eyes.
Thanks for all the great feed back. I am not targeting the kings, mainly the smaller fish. Hope to catch flounder, specks and reds. Has anyone kayak fished little lagoon?
Then I'd got with 8 or 10# test mono, 15#braid is overkill on specs & reds. Plus specs tend to have a soft mouth, the stretch in mono helps prevent hook pulls.Quote:
