I just went and checked sea temps.

There is an 8 degree difference between buoys 42012 and 42040. That's less than 60 miles apart.

While it's been cold as the dickens for us in Alabama there is actually a lot of warm water not too far south in the Gulf. Kings may be earlier than some (me for one) were thinking.
