Hello Sports Fans....Here it is March 2nd and we are ready to "throw the first pitch" in the un-official, John G, First King contest. Leading off is BarnburnerAU on 3/5 with 1000 miles away on deck for 3/6.
Seems a shame that the first on won't be caught till 3/24 (MY DATE)!!!

Sucks that the best date I could chose from is going to be a rainy Wednesday. Even worse is I can't even get out there on the date I picked.
Ok, since it's still open and it's not March 5th yet, I am dropping March 5th and picking up March 7th...if this fits within John G's rules.
So, what if you are fortunate enough to be in a position to fish every day, you hook the first king of the year on the day before YOUR day. Do you land it and have the praise from all for the first king of the year or break off, figuring someone will catch one tomorrow and get the rod?!?!
go ahead and catch it. as john g calls the first kings "scouter kings" they are ahead of the other kings and they will be caught then it will b a few days or a week or 2 until another one is caught. just depends on everthingQuote:

Well, it is obvious that I didn't catch the first king while I was there the first week of March. Once on the pier and twice on Orange Beach of seeing nothing made me question whether or not there are even any fish in the whole Gulf. The good news is that the main reason for the trip to God's Country was a huge success. My daughter's wedding on Romar Beach was awesome.
I echo Ironman's thought. Not that I HAVE a great king rod, but I really don't get to fish enough to do it justice!
I would do the same, so someone get hot and make March 24th a lucky day!!!!

Water temp at DI a toasty 66 today (Physical Oceanography - NOAA Tides & Currents) and with air temps steady in the mid to upper 70's all week, I bet we see the first "scouter" landed before Friday. Good luck to all!
