I guess it depends on your budget really. That pursuit is an ok cheap reel but it won't hold up to too many kings. Invest in a reel with decent drag and washers and bearings. Ebay- penn slammers were awesome reels. 3000 is perfect for trout and Spanish. Battles and conflict are great budget friendly, strong reels.
Also if you're wading in the surf consider a sealed reel like the Spinfisher. I have had both a Battle and a Conflict lock up due to getting splashed in the surf. I have a Spinfisher 4500 that I use for all you mentioned.
spinfisher is my choice as well.
Check Ebay, Craigslist, etc for a Penn 5500SS (or 550SS). Line capacities are 370yards/10# • 270 yards/12# • 240 yards/15#. With 10# line it will be more than enough for spanish, specks, etc. Pick up an extra spool for it and load it up with 15# line and you should be able to work a king to the pier.
The Spinfisher is the way to go, save and buy once , go cheap you'll just have to replace it when fails you,and what if it dies with that fish of a life time ,that's all you'll remember . I know.I lost a King Salmon on the Keni River in Alaska that way , I'll never know how Big it was because my reel's drag failed . I never cheaped out on anything important after that. I'd save till I had the cash , brown bag lunch ,clip coupons, side jobs, what ever, Even now I save and shop for a sale, Ebay ,Craigslist, yard sales, look at all of them
Might consider Daiwa BG's as well. I bought a few and am liking them.
went to walmart today, going with the 4000 and a ugly stik rod.
4000 what?..
I use a 6500 spin fisher V for red snapper. God that's a lot of fun. Has enough power to really lock down on them and has a smooth drag if you want to let them pull drag.
