GULF SHORES, Alabama -- The Gulf State Park Pier may soon offer beer at its concession area as the City Council is poised to vote on allowing alcohol sales there.
The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources as applied for a special license to serve alcohol. A public hearing will be held Monday, Nov. 5, during a special-called council meeting, the first of the new term.
Mayor Robert Craft said there was no push back about the application at Monday's work session.
"We’ll vote on it next week," Craft said. "We didn’t have anybody speaking against it. It wouldn’t be that unusual for us to vote to allow that. I don’t see that as being an issue."
The pier, which is 1,540 feet long, opened July 23, 2009. The old pier had to be rebuilt after Hurricane Ivan destroyed it in 2004.
The current rules and regulation do not allow alcohol on the pier.
Sounds like they snuck one by us! :(

Re: Say it ain't so...
I generally don't mix alcohol and fishing, because I take my fishing pretty seriously. I'm guessing there have been problems over on the panhandle piers related to allowing alcohol? There has to be an enforcable policy to disallow innebriation (i guess public intoxication is already against the law), else I can see the potential for tempers flaring. Fortunately, I haven't encountered an alcohol related issue in my limited time fishing the panhandle piers.

Can we move this to the general forum so more people and search engines can see it?

Re: Say it ain't so...
Mike the pier guy told me a couple days ago they were looking a putting a bar in the north east corner of the covered deck at the pier entrance. Sales there but no alcohol allowed on the pier.

Can they drink then go on the pier? ;)
Lots of situations this year would have been a whole lot worst had alcohol been involved.

Re: Say it ain't so...
The fact that there is no alcohol allowed on the pier is the reason i drive from Pensacola to fish in gulf shores. I hope this does not pass. I have seen what it does on the Pensacola pier.

Re: Say it ain't so...
^^^ I agree, but I must say Navarre Pier is an amazing pier and they serve alcohol. Strange thing, I have no problem with it and no problem taking my family there to fish. It just seems like the type of people that come to our pier are a little different.

Re: Say it ain't so...
As a former police officer I can say that there will be problems because of alcohol. I have seen several regulars tell off several people they thought were encroaching on them already. Now you add alcohol and that liquid courage is going to cause someone to be shark bit from being thrown over the rail. Don't forget the stench of someone drunk or the beer bringing in more yellow jackets getting into the cans.
I hope those Park Rangers like wrestling around with drunks.

Re: Say it ain't so...
It seems like the crowd has a lot to do with if there will be problems or not. With the crowd on the pier already, alcohol just doesn't seem like the best idea. There's already too many people on the pier some days, add alcohol and tempers and you could have some serious fights. They would have to keep some bouncers on hand at all times during the crowded days.

Re: Say it ain't so...Beer sales at the Pier?
I think I'll make it a priority to attend that meeting. Any of you folks like to put your money where your mouth is? If you'd like to get together, you can find me on the pier (look for my flag on the cart) or PM me.

Re: Say it ain't so...Beer sales at the Pier?
[color=blue]I have said from day one of hearing that alcohol will be allowed on our pier that IT IS NOT A GOOD IDEA. In fact, IT"S A BAD IDEA! The Gulf State Park and Pier has always been able to pride itself on the fact that the atmosphere is very clean, and family oriented. I am very much a local and regular fisher chick on the Gulf State Fishing Pier, thus I know and see the type of people we have on the pier regularly. If the city council were to come and observe the interactions that occur on our pier daily, they would comprehend why adding alcohol to the equation would be catastrophic. We already have days that fights would break out (if there weren't people big enough to stop them) without alcohol being involved. Add alcohol in and, well, we are screwed!!! And yes, I agree that "bouncers" or security would have to be on call and readily available should their assistance be required. :slap: Also, someone will have to regulate the amount of consumption for patrons. Will alcohol only be allowed that is purchased at the pier, or will people be allowed to bring their own? Who will be the judge of what "enough" is for each person drinking? Who will be on the pier day in and day out ensuring that the pier is not full of drunken people. I am not saying that everyone who drinks becomes drunk, as I am definitely fond of my Jack Daniels. But I would be willing to bet my life on the fact that alcohol will cause problems that we would not have without it. Working in the probation field, I can see this becoming a "hindsight 20/20" bad idea that will quickly be regreted. I really hope the city council and state park representatives take the time to analyze this idea and not just see the $$$ signs. I can say this, if alcohol becomes the problem I think it will, I WILL NOT bring my children to the pier to fish as I don't want my kids being exposed to it! There is a time and place for alcohol, and OUR PIER IS NOT IT! No one wants to walk on broken glass or :puke:!
When (time) and where is this meeting supposed to take place?
Hopefully, I have not offended anyone with this post! If I did, it was not intended to cause offense and I apologize!
-
Re: Say it ain't so...Beer sales at the Pier?
Elaina, if you don't mind, I'd like to take your post with me to the meeting to present to the powers that be. Your statements are great, but I think we are all preaching to the choir here on the forum about not liking alky sales on the pier. I'm going to find out the time and place of the meeting and do what I can to make our feelings be known.
-
Re: Say it ain't so...Beer sales at the Pier?
Haywire - Absolutely...take it. I will PM you my cell number. Let me know what time the meeting will take place. I have court that afternoon, but I am hoping to be able to go.

one reason I like fishing the gulf shores pier....don't get me wrong..... I will have a beer every now and then, but have seen way to much from the Florida piers and alcohol related issues ....not with all but some....I will not like seeing this there, I would think the liability for the state park, should be reconsidered....injuries,assaults,DUI
some people just can't do it (drink) responsibly

What happened to Nov 5, 2012? The meeting should take place at City Hall. The City Clerk's phone number is 251-968-1125. I will call first thing in the AM to confirm! Assuming I can get anyone to answer the phone....

How is this a contradiction? If you notice, I said that fights WOULD break out, and adding alcohol, the statement changes to fights WILL break out (no matter who is out there). My statement is not a contradiction of itself.
The point is, alcohol (be it beer or liquor) is neither needed nor wanted on our pier! Plain and simple!
